as i'm sure you all know, our may mayor, mayor edwin m. leeassed awau early this morning at zuckerberg san francisco general. he was 65 years old. i want to thank dr. susan orlick who is here with us today and the dedicated professional who is cared for the mayor last night. our thoughts and prayers are with mayor lee's wife anita and his daughters tanya and brianna at this time. when he passed, mayor lee was surrounded by his family, by his friends, and the colleagues who loved him. ed lee lived a life of service cut far too short, but short far too soon. like me, ed grew up in public housing. the son of working class immigrant immigrants, he developed early on a profound sense of community. a commitment to helping others. his father was a veterans, and his mother a seamstress. they instilled in him a humility and self-lest work ethic that he maintained throughout his entire life. the mayor's father passed while he was just a teenager, but heart break could not derail him. ed earned a scholarship from boden college a prestigious liberal arts

i wanted to loosely quote something i heard from mayor edwin lee that i heard not long ago that was u.sldn't have to fight for homes. i was very moved by that and it's something i wanted to share. i wanted to -- acs is proud to be part of the team effort to provide solutions to homelessness in the form of supportive housing and ecs will continue to partner in supportive housing in san francisco. for this project, the master tenant and lead service provider and proud to be part of what is a collaborative effort. with the finish line in sight, in all of our collective efforts to end chronic homelessness for u.s. veterans and moving closer to a functional zero number is a remarkable accomplishment that requires great partnership and the auburn has many. i would like to begin, you know, the planning actually to thank a variety of people, i wanted to start with mayor edwin lee's former office of hope and acknowledge that effort and how that started. that has been carried forward with great determination by the department of homelessness and supportive housing. i say new but i know it's been

i think it's the right thing to adopt item 48 amongst and almost two weeks after the passing of edwin leeto have the conversation and hear from the public. i want to say to the public, those of you have come today, those who have e-mailed us, thank you. it is not a pleasant conversation to have. it's very painful to have, watching the division on racial lines, watching the divisions around gender, is a very painful conversation to have, but it's the conversation we're supposed to have. so i wanted to say those things and i also wanted to express i'm disappointed we did not have this meeting the first week of january, the second week of january, the third week of january. here we are. i also want to note one thing and remind everybody of something which is that when as the city has gone back and forth between district elections and city-wide elections, the way the board president has been shrekked has changed. -- selected has changed. when all 11 of us voted to elect one of us to be the board president, in the old days when there were city-wide elections, it was the number one vote-getter

. >> we're moving to item 9, which is a ceremonial item of the late mayor edwin lee. and i want to say that any councilmembers or staff and people from the public are welcome to share your thoughts and stories and memories of the late mayor ed lee. i would like to just get it started if i might for a few minutes or so. i just want to say that i remember the late mayor lee rather well. i'm a long time resident of san francisco and what i remember him for is the economic boon that took place when he came into office. he came in in january, 2011, when the former mayor, gavin newsom, went to sacramento and became the state lieutenant governor. and at that point, there was a projected $380 million deficit. and the city budget was over $7 billion. and in his six years in office, the budget is up to $10 billion, which is more than many states. considering to his staff, 140,000 jobs have been created as a result of him being here in the job. and i distinctly recall that he didn't really want to be mayor. he didn't like the political spats and being in the limelight. but yet h

earlier, we did lose the mayor of this great city, mayor ed lee, so as we adjourn in honor of mayor edwin lee, let's please have a moment of silence. mayor edwin m.lee passed away on tuesday, december 12th at 1:11 a.m. at san francisco general hospital. his family, friends and colleagues were at his side. mayor lee suffered a cardiac arrest while he was out shopping late monday at his neighborhood safeway. susan erlich, ceo of priscilla chan and mark zuckerberg san francisco general hospital and trauma center said the mayor arrived after 10:00 p.m. in critical condition by ambulance and doctors tried to revive him for several hours. dr. lee was born in seattle, one of six children from chinese immigrants. i we he went onto work for the chinese american asian law caucus. he began working for the city and county of san francisco in 1989, holding various positions before being appointed as city administrator in 2005 by then-mayor gavin newsom. his rise from city bureau kratter bureaucrat to mayor came in 2011 after gavin newsom was elected lieutenant governor. mayor lee, known for his signature
