dagen: on egypt's economy. the economy has literally fallen off a cliff after the russian jetliner in what is called a terrorist attack last year was taken down after taking off going to russia. we can talk about that is the morning moves on. we have traffic in the first three months of the year cut in half. maria: we have breaking developments throughout the morning. i want to go to breaking news out of egypt to bring in an active pilot and airspace.com creator todd curtis. thanks for joining us. we are piecing together what appears to be the plane carrying 66 people crashing in the mediterranean sea. >> a very sudden onset, three air-traffic controllers tried to contact the aircraft, they simply didn't respond and it disappeared. that speaks to something fast acting, possibly catastrophic happening to the aircraft. maria: some officials say they saw fire in the sky, don't want to make too many jumps here but something sent that plane crashing into the sea. what are you looking at in terms of what could be a f

thinking about egypt, egypt is in a confrontation with the terrorists both in the sinai and other partse country so experts short of receiving those images we are waiting for the image, a flash like the case of the russian airplane, short of having that information. >> i went to pick your brain because you are on with us every time we have this type of horrible situation and we talk about the sinai peninsula and this is a hotbed, a very difficult area. we had that incident back in march with that suicide bomber, turned out to be a fake, in cyprus. give us a little history and how it plays into today and what are experts considering when they look at this horrifying picture? >> it is evident that most experts following events in egypt may say there were no whether conditions, no distress signal or calls saying something is wrong with the plane. most likely the experts will say egypt is at war with terrorism so let's look at possible scenarios of terror attacks. they are very multiple, you have the possibility of a bomb and a whole world of investigations, the air force and terrorism. and

egypt air, we're trying to get in touch with folks from egypt their to get more information. ian lee is awaiting word in cairo. you're looking at the official tweet from egypt air there. so, again, if you're just joining us, this is what's happening. mary schiavo has been helping us to report this story. david joins us here many times on cnn as well. we'll go back to you, mary, first. we talked about the time and there would not be lots of air traffic at this time. we just spoke with ian about what happened with the metro jet, as well. there are many possibilities here, but we just don't know at this point what's going on? >> well, that's right and many years ago, i worked on the egypt air, which came out of the united states and eventually ruled to be an intentional downing or an intentional suicide by that flight. and that was -- oh, boy, that's at least 17 years ago, when that happened. and it was the same kind of thing. the plane was off the east coast, it went missing, and eventually, it was that. but that took many, many months. and you know, egypt never agreed with the

egypt aviation officials are now confirming that an egypt airplane from paris' charles degaulle airport to cairo airport has crashed. there are reports that searchers have picked up an automated distress signal from the plane's emergency system somewhere north of the egyptian coastline. flight ms804 vanished somewhere over the mediterranean. the air bus 8320's manifest lists 56 passengers including a child and two babies and a crew of 10. the egyptian aviation ministry says 30 egyptians and 15 french and one belgian and one britain along with several other nationalities were all on board. we learned the pilot has more than 6,000 hours of flying time a short time ago. ben scraw minute hall -- benjamin hall said the pilot's name was benjamin shakur. the last contact with the plane happened about 10 minutes before it disappeared from radar. we are flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet and there are conflicting reports as to whether or not the jet went down over the egyptian airspace. the latest information crossing the associated press wire saying it was in egyptian airspace at the time and

that being confirmed from egypt air. the plane, egypt air flight 804 was lost from radar around 2 ooment 45 -- 2:45 a.m. local time and flying at 37,000 feet. egypt air now confirming that that flight has indeed crashed. let's go back to our fog news correspondent who has been standing by with additional information. benjamin? >> hi, heather. we are learning it was 19 minutes after the distress call that the plane vanished from the radar. initial reports was it had gone down and there was no communication and it came out of the sky. that turns out to be false. we are hearing hearing from egyptian aviation authority that it was a crash and egypt air saying they found a beacon or the signal of a beacon in the waters off the coast of egypt. possibly 100 to 150 miles north. this is three hours 40 minutes into the flight. this is the fifth flight that plane had taken during the day. we do know on wednesday it was said to have had a routine maintenance check in cairo. despite reports of a spotty safety background this plane wh

if you are egypt air. it makes sense you have the mate sense done in france, if you do the route for france regularly. it is the airbus home, it's based if tulouse. and back to what brought down the metrojet. this is why we have been so focused on the back-door security at the airports, the aircraft for the last number of years. they believe explosives packed in a soda can brought down that jet. imagine how easy it is to smuggle a soda can on a jet liner, without anybody checking to see if the cans are free explosives redue. they detected explosive material in the container. they don't necessarily believe that the trismg was responsible yet they have arrested at least one individual in connection with it. it is a small device. not a suitcase. a soda can. all you have to do is have a device that will have a catastrophic breach of the haul, and sever the communication lines, you can very quickly create nothing but a terrible ha hull of an aircraft that destined to fall in the sea below. we are not saying tha

again, egypt air say aing it disappeared about 174 miles off the coast of egypt.n, we have been told that weather was good. should not have been a factor. this was a relatively new plane. an airbus a-320 built in 2003. and that is essentially what we know right now. investigators looking at the maintenance records and the safety records of this familiar airplane to see if there were safety concerns there. we haven't heard anything yet. and of course search and rescue is now on scene. not only egyptian but also greek officials who have sent two aircraft. they have a couple helicopters on stand by from one of the southern islands in the med terrate mediterranean. and a larger area, the plane disappeared from radar does not mean that it went down in that location or that it went down at all. we don't know. we're assuming that's the case. because it's -- it did disappear from radar without any sort of distress call, any sort of communication with air traffic control in greece, handling the flight path at that point. so, yeah, at this point, the search and rescue is on

we continue to follow breaking news out of egypt. we're getting new information that includes that the ntsb is monitoring the situation, the investigation and may be sending assistance to help the egyptian officials as well as greek officials who are investigating this. greek officials right now say debris has been found that may be from the egyptair jetliner that disappeared over the mediterranean while in route paris to cairo. it vanished more than 14 hours ago and darkness is fast approaching in the search area. there are under two hours of daylight left. 66 people were on board the airbus a-320, no americans among them. at the news conference a few hours ago egypt's af yan minister said a terror attack is more likely than mechanical failure. greece's defense minister said the aircraft just entered egyptian air space near the end of the four-hour flight when the plane dropped 22,000 feet and swerved sharply before it disappeared from radar. egyptair flight 804 was a half hour from landing in cairo when radar contact was lost. we k

big problem for egypt. i mentioned generalier in july the group claimed to fire a missile at an egyptian ship. they posted pictures on-line that appear to show a missile. and then a ship on fire. the egyptian navy disputes that's what happened. they say it was basically a fire fight with militants. this is a hostile region right right now. the egyptian navy has been threatened by militants. the egyptian navy is a very large navy. they have a large number of ships, sixth largest in the world. largest in the middle east. in the africa area. their ships will definitely be on scene in that area. they will start with directly below where that last radar blip was and they will spread out from there. i also mentioned that the u.s. navy has a fleet that's headquartered in naples, italy. when i was in the navy we had a constant presence in the mediterranean. the u.s. navy has a constant presence in the mediterranean and it would be likely that our ships will be supporting search and rescue effort. based on the small

certainly not unusual for egypt. we're now hearing from a spokesperson saying they have not received a distressed signal. we had earlier heard from the egyptian airline that there was some kind of an automated signal from the aircraft that the egyptian military received. the egyptian military saying they have received no such signal. this really does highlight the country of egypt. in 2013 you had a military coup. the division between the civilian authority and the military authority in egypt is a very real division. and we're sort of seeing that play out in the early hours of this story. >> it is a complicated in egypt. mubarak who is now at sharm el-sheik, infirm, house arrest, and the former general under the muslim brotherhood who then took over, it is a very complicated panorama there in egypt. i want to go back to tom costello. with his conflicting reports, as to whether egyptian officials do have some distressed report. a pinging or something like that, it looks like they're backtracking on that. that isn't un

it was bound for cairo airport in egypt. it left about 15 minutes late local time in paris, about 1111:09 pam. it was scheduled to land 3:00 a.m. local time in cairo. this is something that obviously did not happen. we're talking about ten, 15 minutes or so prior to the scheduled landing time, that plane disappeared from radar, simply disappeared. it was approximately 260 kilometers north of the seashore. the shoreline there in egypt, in those waters of the mediterranean between greece and cairo. it is a most peculiar situation. there have been varying reports as to what has happened. we have the associated press quoting egyptian authorities saying the plane has crashed. however, there is not confirmation specifically to that. there have been various reports. interestingly, this is an area that is heavily covered by radar from a multitude of different countries in the region. so even if egypt radar or egyptair's radar was not working properly, it would have been corroborated by multiple different sources in that area. let's

this will only increase that focus on egypt and on air travel in egypt. this used to be a major tourist destination in this country just five years ago. this would have been a place, especially at this time of year, where tourists would be flocking to not only places like cairo but also to the beaches there along the coastline. so certainly not good news for egypt. we hope that these early reports will somehow turn out that this is all okay. but at 37,000 feet, as we've been saying, a catastrophic incident like that is probably the most likely thing when we're looking at a complete loss of communication with air traffic control. >> and that is something family members just absolutely do not want to hear at this hour as they are holding on to hope that somehow this plane has been able to land somewhere. but unfortunately at this hour, we have not been given that kind of word at all. all we know is that it disappeared, and the words that they're used is disappeared, vanished. there was no distress call. nothing like that. it just went off of the radar. but,

egypt, the whole terrorism industry has been dying in egypt. a good friend of mine is a very senior guy in that industry. he is here in new york, right now, was coming here yesterday to try to promote tourism and then of course it was a disaster last night. obviously, it targets that. but i think one of the interesting things about this bombing is that it is so egyptian. it is an egyptair flight. not a full flight. obviously, egypt is a target. but if we were really talking about isis and talking about them going for a big score this would not have been a big score. also what is interesting is that the egyptians have acknowledged pretty quickly this was terrorism. and nancy youssef, who is egyptian, said that much more than any other offense this really affected egyptians. there may have only been a smaller amount of people on board, but everybody felt they knew these people. and the government is responding very differently. >> i grew up in this country, but with all its problems i love egypt. i said the greatest trip we were ever on as a fami

they believe it is libya and egypt because egypt is a direct link. so there's been this concern. i've seen it built up much more in the last year. when i talk to intel people an i talk to them on an almost daily basis they have been waiting for something to happen. it wasn't as if but when. and then you bring in the influx of problems that have happened in paris, happen in belgium, and that just plays back in to all of this. i think the issue hard for us right now, egyptair tweeted out saying the egyptian military has gone to a site. so that suggests ma maybe they did find some debris someplace. you hope that somehow, somebody survived this but it went down at 38,000 feet and it was immediate, it leads you to believe, okay, maybe this could be a terrorist attack. they are going through the same questions. and they will have more intel than we have but the same processes. was this plane, did it have a mechanical problem? was this something where it was something on board. the pilot and everybody can do all they want to but if there is something in the payload it doesn't matter. >>

we've seen air terrorism in egypt in the past.ve seen a number of instances where we know that terrorists or people who would do harm for causes that are related to the middle east have been related, but anything going into the middle east where you have egypt very tense domestic situation, it's just going to raise all sorts of flags. and of course the first thought will be is terrorism involved. >> absolutely. i imagine this will be a multi-agency, multi-country investigation that is taking place right now. give us a sense of what mobilizes at this early hour. >> well, right now it will be the recovery that's going to take priority. the egyptians, because it appears the aircraft has come down in egyptian air space even though it's over the mediterranean will take the lead on that since it's something like a disaster at sea you'll have all sorts of nations joining. and so any nation that has ships or boats or rescue capabilities along the mediterranean will join in the search, but because it's an egyptian airplane, because it occu

i want to get right to arwa in egypt right now. there is such a mystery with regard to the path of this plane not just before it crashed but before it took off. there are a number of countries that it touched on in the 24 hours leading up to what happened. walk me through why that is significant and where that plane was. >> reporter: it stopped in at least two african nations among them tunisia and then went oto paris. but according to what authorities are saying the plane was swept in paris. presumably if this was an act of terrorism and if explosives were involved, given that the plane was swept in paris authorities either missed something or it was one of the passengers, crew members, someone else who brought these explosives on to the plane after it was actually swept. it's not just u.s. officials who are saying that their initial inclination is to lean towards stating this to be an act of terrorism but in egypt, as well, the country's civil aviation minister saying this is more likely to be terrorism than some sort of technica
