this is coming from egyptair. they are now confirming that there was, in fact, a distress call made from the plane. we're still trying to specify when that took place. we're still trying to put all the pieces together on how much information was provided before the flight disappeared. but this is the first confirmation we have now that there was, in fact, a distress call made. at this moment, egypt and greece are searching for the missing egyptairplane. 66 people were on board. reuters is reporting egyptian aviation officials believe the plane crashed into the sea. >> flight 804 dropped off radar over the mediterranean as it headed from paris to cairo. conditions were clear and calm when the plane crossed the water. and you can see that located there. give you an idea of where they think this plane disappeared. we don't know any more details than that. >> but it is certainly a race against time if the plane did, in fact, go down in those waters. journalist linda labrapulu joins us on the phone with more on the gre

egyptair will sound familiar. it's been in the headlines a number of times over the years, most often for hijacking-related incidents, according to the aviation safety network, since 1976, the airline has been the victim of at least eight hijackings. you may remember the most recent one a couple months ago when a flight heading to cairo was forced to land in cyprus by a man on board who claimed to be wearing a suicide belt. authorities later learned that the belt was a fake and he wanted to meet his ex-wife who was living there. back in 2009, on another egyptair flight, a sudanese passenger pulled out a knife shortly after takeoff and deemed the flight be delivered to jerusalem to quote, liberate it. they overpowered the man and that ended well. the deadliest hijacking was 1985 when three terrorists shot and killed the security guard and two flight attendants while taking over the plane which eventually landed on the island of malta. and 60 deaths included the hijackers and many passengers. we have not heard from

egyptair confirming it. that does change things. >> we're learning now, i spoke to you about 25 minutes ago, egyptair there, now a search and rescue team picked up a signal from an emergency beacon which they believe is part of flight 804. another significant development the last couple minutes. hopefully that's some good news they can get to this quickly. the fact that they are saying there was a distress call. that changes everything. does that mean that terrorism is ruled out? no. but it does bring back in the possibility that there was mechanical malfunction that brings that avenue much greater than it was. when we were told there was no distress call and just fell out of the sky, the likelihood of mechanical failure had gone down. but a distress call could be something is on board. we don't know what it was. the two significant details that we've learned in the last literally two or three minutes was that it was a distress call. and that the beacon apparently, the signal has been located by the egyptian

it has been now eight hours since egyptair flight 804 disappeared from radar. that plane took off from charles de gaulle airport about 11:09 p.m. local time in a 04 disapped from radar. it took off at 11:04 and headed to the cairo airport when it simply vanished. it happened around 2:45 cairo time, just vanishing from radar screens. according to officials, the plane was just about ten miles into egypt air space when it disappeared from the radar trackers and it was reportedly flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet at the time. that would be a high cruising altitude. according to egyptair, there were 56 passengers on board that flight including three children. also seven crew members and three security personnel on board on behalf of egyptair. none of the passengers are reportedly american citizens. right now, egyptian armed forces are conducting search operations with a number of planes and naval units and greek military sending in two ships to help. we hope it will be a rescue before it turns into the recovery operation. egypt's military is reporting it has rece

there's a history with egyptair. there is a previous, high-profile accident with the 767 about 17 years ago in which everybody on board was killed, i think 200 people when the co-pilot commandeered that airplane again. had a battle with the captain for control and that went in to the atlantic ocean just off the coast of new york. so initially, you know, we never know. it is just speculation until they start to find debris. if they find debris in the waters of the mediterranean, which now it is daylight there for two hours, i'm sure they are scouring the area. as soon as they find debris they will be able to get a better idea from the debris field itself how widely scattered are the parties of the plaep airplane? they will be able to understand did the airline come apart in flight or hit the water intact if that is what happened. and that is significant if they can find debris or debris field or did it come intact in to the water. >> yes. i don't know if you were listening to the previous call when i was on with benja
