according to ehrlichman -- according to ehrlichman, nixon said, no one will ever assassinate me to make agnew president, okay? this is a jonathan aiken book. he talks about how king charles ii said this to his brother james, they'll never kill me, james, and make you president or king. then along came agnew's own problems. the state of maryland is nicknamed the easy state. politicians like to call it the free and easy state because of the rampant corruption in that state. in the late 1970s there was a football game at the university of virginia, and they announced a special guest, the governor of maryland, who came out running in an orange prison suit, all right? because so many of them went to prison. agnew got caught up in this. he got caught up taking kickbacks. it was the way it was done in maryland. he believed that nixon should come to his defense, but nixon -- this was nothing nixon could or should have done. agnew would resign in october of 1973. they had a last meeting in the oval office. agnew said that nixon was very warm to him, but at the same time he believed that nixon co

the president brings bill rogers in at a very difficult time in '73 when he's about to fire ehrlichman and haldeman. it was a strange relationship. >> bill rogers and dick nixon were close personal friends through most all of his career. he was his best friend in the eisenhower cabinet. henley would have liked -- haldeman would have liked to get rid of rogers, but they would never say that to dick nixon because dick nixon was loyal. >> he did marginalize. >> he marginalized what he was doing. bill rogers wasn't able to cope with the ability to wield power the way kissinger could do, they knew how to move things around in a tougher way. bill was just a very nice guy, a very smart guy and a very honest guy. >> fast forward a bit. did you see president nixon after he was resigned? how long after he resigned did you see him? >> well, i saw him frequently afterward, i don't know how often. the first call i had -- before he left the smoking gun tape had him talking to colson about me in which he said -- between he and colson said he's not our kind of guy, he's got egg on his face. that was k

i remember the telling question of john ehrlichman. have you ever seen mr. nixon without a suit? the answer was no. i spoke with a secret service agent who served with mr. nixon in san clemente. he said that even when they went to visit his mother, he was wearing a suit. what was it about wearing formal attire was so important to the president and his manner? >> i don't think it was important to him. i think it was just -- i mean, i think it was generational. it was lots of things. but it was just what people did. a lot of people did. i can remember as an undergraduate of late '50s and early '60s, everybody wore coat and tie, jacket and tie. so it wasn't that unusual. he did have -- there was a very fine -- an artist, i guess, this infinite degrees within a single color and a palette, and there were infinite degrees of nixon' sartorial formality and informality. again, i think it's generational. i don't think there's anything weird about it. he would have smoking jackets that were for relaxation. and he would have sports jackets. but that would be -- when he'd go out and golf, he
