eisenhower was thoughtful. he was conscientious, a deliberate decision maker who worked long hours, maintained careful records, insured that everyone up and down the chain of command was kept well-informed, keys to success in any undertaking but absolutely essential in war and in war planning. not only that but throughout it all, despite bureaucratic snafus , logistical failures and petty squabbles among subordinates, he remained determinedly cheerful, encouraging, optimistic. the only visible evidence that he was roiling inside was the ubiquitous cigarette almost always to be found in his hand, where he smoked four packs of unfiltered camels a day. the assignment to command the --ay operation tested those his patience, his powers of equanimity -- at every step. it was evident from the start that the americans had a strikingly different command culture and organizational habits. here he is in between monty and bradley, and i think that is a significant relationship. his position in the middle mean s something.
