he previously issued a state of emergency for el dorado county and the california national guard has been called in to assist the chp and help manage traffic control. traffic control points for any evacuations. we begin our coverage tonight with our chief meteorologist, bill martin, and bill they're facing two days of red flag warnings. yeah, really, the next 24 hours is make or break for the caldera fire, maybe 36 hours as the winds really come up significantly tomorrow midday and last into the evening hours. and the winds are in a direction from the southwest, which is essentially the footprint of this fire. if you can look at the red, it's going from the south towards the note towards the east as a southwest wind right now we're seeing 20 mile an hour gusts. this is currently but we can forecast into the future. so you see the temperatures change as we get into tomorrow morning. look at that. echo lake. um, that's at echo summit on 50 27 mile an hour winds up to i think i saw some thirties, so there's a 30 down at twin bridges. so what we're looking at is an aggressive wind patter

cal fire tells us that the weather conditions are better today up in el dorado county, where the cal door fire grew to over 50,000 acres overnight. essentially it doubled in size. but ktvu is rob roth tells us the fire is still out of control, with more crews joining the battle. the keldorf fire continues to rage continues to threaten homes and communities. but cal fire says there are some positives wednesday, especially compared with yesterday when the caldera grew from 6000 acres to almost 54,000 acres. the winds tuesday night we're not as strong as predicted. we're getting more resources in. obviously the weather isn't doing what it was the fires and burning as actively as it was, and we're getting those crews out there on the line, so obviously we're going to start making more progress. and yesterday the community of somerset is still under threat, depending on the winds, and there had been concerns about pollock pines. at this point, paul, it finds is looking much better. obviously still under threat, hence the reason that the area is evacuated, but there is no active fire in th

the fast moving kaldor fire in el dorado county is threatening more than 6000 homes, prompting evacuation warnings in many areas near highway 88. this fire has burned through more than 65,000 acres. reporter brian hickey has the latest. we're here on the edge of the calgary fire in el dorado county, and this is just one of the many hotspots that crews continue to mop up in the community of grizzly flats. this area was burned over on tuesday, where we saw some of the most significant structure damage here. there's still not an official total on the number of homes that have burned, but we ourselves have seen a number of homes that have been leveled by this fire when it came through on tuesday, and so now crews are here. mopping up some of these hot spots in many cases using fire to fight fire during these early morning periods, allowing it to burn and create blackened areas that will then eventually act like a buffer. should the fire flare back up when conditions worse than later on the day when the humidity falls and the temperature rises the fire as of this morning, according to cal fire

our reporter spent the day on the fire lines and joins us from el dorado county.t does it look like tonight? >> it is really looking horrible. the fire is picking up speed in the last few hours. we are in the town of myers just outside south lake tahoe. about four months from us -- about four miles from us, we were there 15 minutes ago. fires burning on both sides of highway 50 very close to homes. all of that is happening a mere four miles from our location. you can see the thick red layer of smoke hovering over the mountains. fire crews are worried about what is to come in the next few hours. 15 days into the fire, crews faked -- crews faced the flame in record heat. highway 50 south of myers and tahoe basin. for the temperature's are at the highest the fires will experience. >> the heat unbearable. the wind shrouding any visibility. >> we were told the expectation is the fire could go up today. >> the concern today is the increased temperatures. the hottest day of the firefight that has been going on for two weeks. and the humidity level is low. >> one of a 20
