cbs's elaine cobbe reports from paris. >> reporter: towns and cities across france bear the scars of four nights of violence. angry crowds launched fireworks at police and set fire to buildings. burnt out cars litter the streets in several areas. last night, the most violence was seen in marseilles, france's second largest city. protesters hurled stones at police cars there and masked youths torched trash cans as police use tear gas to try to clean the crowds. many took advantage of the chaos to go on a looting spree, attacking clothing and other stores. the governrnment sent ririot po to marseilles and to bordeaux in the southwest to back up local law enforcement, and many communities imposed curfews. the rapid spread of protests across france took the authorities by surprise. marseilles on the mediterranean coast is at the other end of the country from the scene of the deadly police shooting on tuesday in the paris suburb as nontear. a 17-year-old, identified only by his first name nahel, was stopped for speeding. as the car abruptly moved off again, a gunshot was heard. nahel died

cbs's elaine cobbe is in paris.ks turned into weapons as protesters launched them at riot police and buildings across france. cars were torched and firefighters responded to some 6,000 fires over the last two nights. 45,000 police officers are on the streets. the government has deployed armored vehicles to quell riots. many ocal authorities have limited public transport services and imposed curfews. the protesters accuse the police of racism and excessive force after 17-year-old nahel, of algerian-moroccan descent, was shot dead at close range during a traffic stop tuesday morning. the officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed under formal investigation for murder. a third of the 900 people arrested last night were under 18, some as young as 12. "it is the responsibility of the parents to keep their children at home," said president emmanuel macron. nahel's mother, who led a march in his memory thursday, will bury her son tomorrow, amid fears of renewed violence then and through the weekend. elaine cobbe, cbs
