eleanor roosevelt. eleanor roosevelt on screen is her first book. please join me in welcoming ms. beachum to the roosevelt reading festival. well thanks for that introduction and thanks, everybody for being here. thanks. also, the archivists here who are so important to all this work that we do, thanks to the other researchers and scholars. and also i have to thank both franklin and eleanor roosevelt for this shining example that they made, for all of us so i'll be talking about my book, eleanor roosevelt on screen. and i think i'm the one here today talking about air rather than fdr. and also a film and television historian. so my topic's a little different than everyone else today, but over the years, i found myself recognizing that eleanor was not a pioneer in print and radio but she's the first woman in the united states to host major public affairs, broadcast television. and that's something nobody about, but quite a big deal today with mrs. aired weekly on nbc 1950 and albert einstein made his first television appearance as. a guest on her show on the premiere that also feat

eleanor originally decided to invite ms. anderson to the white house and then she decided that she needed something bigger. so she worked behind the scenes with secretary of the interior and they scheduled a concert at the lincoln memorial. and this is a picture on the top of marian anderson singing at the lincoln memorial. and it was also broadcast on radio. 75,000 people integrated audience was there to see and hear marian anderson. and this is a copy of the famous letter that she sent to the d.a. my dear mrs. henry and robert, i am afraid that i have never been a very useful member of the daughters of the american revolution. so i know of very little difference to you whether i resign or whether i continue to be a member of your organization. however, i am in complete disagreement with the attitude taken in refusing constitution hall to great artist. you have set an example, which seems to me unfortunate and i feel obliged to send into you my resignation. you had an opportunity to lead in an enlightened way, and it seems

and then what happened after eleanor? so let's begin with the washingtons. if you think about the history of our first ladies in civil rights, it's a checkered past. and we have to begin to look at the washington and a precedent that they set. they brought their enslaved servants to the president's home, both in new york and philadelphia when they went to philadelphia for the second capital. they had to circumvent a philadelphia law in order to keep their enslaved workers with them. there was a law that said that any enslaved person who was in the city of philadelphia for more than six months was freed. so what washington's did was they sent their enslaved workers back and forth between mount vernon and their presidential home. and this was a way of having anyone, not having anyone there for more than six months during one of those transition periods. martha's personal oil made by these men owner, also known as on each judge, escaped. she knew when the transition was happening and she used that as an opportunity to leave slidell. there's a wonderful book tha

so one of the main collection was the eleanor roosevelt collection. but the principal one was the rex g. tugwell collection, which not everyone knows about. it's one of the best names around. and let just read a bit from my book describing him as one of the most progressive members of the administration, rexford g. tugwell, often denounced by conservative critics. rex, the red plotting to upset the social order. but the press couldn't help but mention that he was also young, curly headed and handsome with some dubbing him, quote, the handsomest of the brain stars and the best dressed man in the administration at tugwell is confirmation hearing. conservative senator allison de cotton ed smith even framed those hollywood looks as a strike against the nominee, complaining that tugwell was, quote, a very handsome gentlemen who would starve to death as a farmer and thus had no place in the of agriculture. so rexford g. tugwell or rex, as his friends called, was the director of the resettle ment administration. that where the music unit that my book talks a

so i figured, well, it worked with mary with fdr and eleanor so i'll do abe. mary, i spent two years on writing a book about them and i realized that she couldn't carry the story the way eleanor. eleanor was everywhere i wanted to be. she's in the middle of everything happening. so luckily went up to auburn, new york to give a talk and that's where seward, his secretary of state from. and i went to the house that he had lived in, which is still preserved like. it was then and i found out he'd written a thousand letters to his wife because she was in auburn while he was in washington during war. and they're amazing to talk about their relationship. she talks about lincoln. he talks about the cabinet and letters are treasures for biographers, letters and diaries. and then i found out he was important in cabin. and then i went to columbus, ohio, and there was chase, who was the secretary of treasury. he had a huge diary that he kept night, night after night. then i went to saint louis, and that's where the attorney general came from. bates and he had a diary. so

the dartmouth the eleanor the beaver and the william. and they arrived in they arrived a massachusetts in that order. and three of them arrived in boston properly. the dartmouth, the eleanor and the beaver fine, the william hit a storm and wrecked off of cape cod and it wrecked on december 11th. now, that could have been the of it. it's hard to imagine that crates full of tea are going to survive a shipwreck. it would have been a tea already, you'd think. but it wasn't the ships, the ships cargo was salvaged. and so one of the east india merchants with handling the east india companies affairs in boston, we call them the consignees one of the consignees got on his horse and rode out to the cape and sorted this out. he found some men to salvage the tea and he paid them in tea from. the williams consignment too, for labor, which was no small feat and potentially quite a dangerous job to be salvaging this off of the rocks the ship had wrecked. and of course, rocks and waves in a storm are dangerous places. so we paid them in tea and after s

if you win on the dartmouth, the eleanor and the beaver will fall in line. and that's as far as it went. >> any more questions from ourme audience? let me get over here, one moment. hello, thank you so much for the talk. it is been very interesting. in regards to your chapter in your research did you find any instances of women gaining any political agency during this time? think boycott as well as some that british manufacturing. they were making their own clothes and things like that. more so than going outside of their own domestic sphere is whatat i'm thinking about. in terms of political agency. >> is a great question. the most striking place political engagement by women is in south carolina. you have women -- mckay summa -t women there possible men, you never really know. writing that boycotting td political organization and need for women to support their fellow englishmen. they refer to their husband as englishman during this period in this boycott movement. so it worth noting the limit of american nationalism there. however, i would caution on that

on her expeditions, maureen, scientist, eleanor fica williams measures changes in ocean temperatures and currents. the oceans are an important part of the climate system. and so they also have ations of the ocean sea temperatures warming of the ocean circulation warming. without these observations, it would be a lot harder to understand what's actually changing in the ocean climate. this gray band shows the range of average c temperatures during the past 40 years or so. since march of 2023, they've been higher every day, then any previously measured. it's a trends that has continued in 2024 natural fluctuations in oceans contrive temperatures up in town, but they can't account for the current spike parts system. scientists, you a honda beer is concerned about the values and one ocean in particular bosses he has their own diversity is what's very unusual. a lot of the temperatures at different points in the atlantic, which are rising to levels never measured before this commission warden. on the one hand, it's very surprising, but on the other, it's exactly what's been and for years.
