the eleanor roosevelt story won the best documentary in 1965. "eleanor and franklin" in 1976. that is how i was introduced as a girl to the roosevelts. she has been in more than 50 different films or television shows including the first lady series in 2022 and a major topic of at least 25 documents. she recognized that the movies were primarily enjoyed as entertainment but also identified them as something used to shape public opinion and act as a powerful stimulus. by 1951 er hosted a discussion of television itself. impressed by the potential but concerned with how convincing selling to sponsors of products it was proving to be. experiencing and exploiting the visual mediums were part of eleanor roosevelt's skill set. from the early sound era to the time television became a dominant political force. thank you. so we have time for se ques >> we have time for questions. if you have a question come up to the microphone and you can ask it right here. >> thank you very much. that was a terrific talk. my question for you has to do with cartoons during the 1930s especially and in t

eleanor roosevelt was in a unique situation. you had a major depression, a world war, you have everything going on the south, a lynching, the jim crow laws, and eleanor pulled that altogether in a way that no one else could. and other first ladies have responded to war. look at laura bush. president bush did not plan on being a wartime president and laura bush and not plan on the wartime first lady, but they adapt. i really think will happen is that some of this is going to be contextual and is going to be societal changes in what is going on politically, what is going on in the world, and they will begin adapting to it. so as a senate beginning, i don't think is going to be a whole lot to change, because that basic purpose is the president, is for the president's agenda, and they will find ways of doing it as every first lady as. >> people have a perception ladies and define what they are doing. well, they don't. miss johnson came in after jfk was assassinated, so her first year was defined by trying to work jackie kennedy. lau

well, i'm glad you mention eleanor roosevelt. yeah. so he had a column that ran. so, yes.when i mean, yes, a lot of other instances where that has passed. he was writing. so the question is, did did ernie cross paths with eleanor roosevelt or any of the roosevelt's. we'll say. so i had i had kind of a chuckle reading some of his letters from, the time when fdr was running for his third to his third. why can't i think of the name, his term, third term, and he had written all these letters about great. now we're going to have a dictator in the united states. and, you know, we're only supposed to have two terms. and what's this fdr guy? and, you know, he had this kind of sort of funny response to it before he ever became a war correspondent. eleanor roosevelt was a big fan of his because he wrote a lot of pieces that helped to kind of shine a light on depression era america, which was, you know, something that she was very passionate about addressing. and so they were they were sort of fans of each other from a distance. and at one point, eleanor roosevelt invited while ernie

i had the pleasure of meeting eleanor oddo of california, one of the a reds of roses.his single mom with an info son learned how to operate a rivet gun and began work at an aircraft plant. with the exception of a brief hiatus, a immediately after the war, eleanor remained on the job. and till she reached the age. of 95. that likely made her our longest working rosie the riveter. the contributions made by the roses of the great state of maine to the war effort were all so extraordinary. during the war in maine, shipyards built more than 1300 ships. nearly 2000, remarked a group of women were among the workforce at bath iron words that produce one destroyer every 18 days. think about that. with 3700 women working as welders, mechanics and crane operators as south portland, maine, shipped yard produce to hundreds 74 liberty ships. among that extraordinary workforce was albina babineau of old orchard beach. upon turning eight years of age, she trained as a welder and helped shipyard uphold its motto of down the ways in fewer days. during this time, she met a young soldier
