in 18 1793, eli develops the cotton gin. then all sudden we can grow short staple cotton across the south. three seasons a year. so that by 1840 it's $0.05 a pound. by 1850 it's $0.11 a pound, it'll double by 1860. when we produce point 5 million bales of and nobody will go to war, we can cotton. and the south provides 80% of the world's of the cotton. they provide 80% to england who has 6 million people tied to the textile. that's as many whites as exist the south at the time. and they provide percent of france's now a couple of things happen time when the war starts the south embargoes the cotton they send any out because they want europe to feel the pinch. the problem is there was a cotton glut in 1859 and 1860. warehouses are bulging all over europe. nobody thinks the war is going to go very long. so if you're in europe, you think what a good time to get rid of inventory about time the south determines we could really use income from the sale of cotton. the north has now started to put in a blockade. moreover, the market

joining us now is white house reporter for "politico," eli thank you for joining us.things will get going until the end of next year or early next. what are concerns they've been sharing with you? >> democrats have lots of concerns. they're always going to no matter what the state of the race, is even when you have a president raising a lot of money and not facing a challenge and not needing to spend money at this point. that's what the campaign believe, as you laid out. anxiety is around the president's age, which is sort of obvious and hard to really get around. that's going to be a mental hurdle for a lot of voters just watching the president on the campaign trail. the other thing is the economy. the white house is really focused on selling bidenomics, on making sure the president gets credit for what they see is a really strong economy. the metrics, the numbers every month are backing that up so far. they want to make sure that americans feel the economy and appreciate the president and his policies, democrats' policies, are the reasons why unemployment is so low,
