madison: eli lilly had mondrian for diabetes.he exact same drug was approved for obesity two weeks ago. that is nearly on the market. we have seen a lot of off label use with montero and it is the exactly same drug. it seems to be more effective than wegovy. there the number one competitor to novo nordisk right now. jon: we are trying to figure out the ultimate size of market. it is early in the cycle. historically people thought about weight loss treatments. they were not necessarily committing to that for years. as more of this research is coming out about improving your odds about a heart attack, how long a commitment are people having to make to these treatments as users? madison: that is the thing is that these drugs are supposed to be taken for the rest of someone's life. when people go off of these drugs, what we are seeing as they regained the weight and that might increase the risk for other health issues. ideally a person is supposed to be on it for the rest of their lives but we are seeing between spotty insurance cove

it's the same formulation of eli lilly's manjaro. unique here is the different name that you have of the product and that basically allows for the company to track the product much better. when it's used for the treatment of obesity and it's helpful in terms of payer negotiation. >> is this likely to be the biggest selling drug of all time? >> we think it has a very, very strong shot of being the biggest drug of all time. obviously competing closely with nova's ozempic. we think this category for sure will be the largest pharmaceutical market of all time. >> who's going pay for it and how? because the list price is 1,000 a month. some insurers are going to cover it. i assume. but most are probably not going to want to. >> correct. yeah. i think this is probably the main challenge is gaining reimbursement for the obesity opportunity over time. that being said, we do have some really important data coming this weekend from nova called the slelect study and that coul really prove out that the benefits of this product for patients who ha

let's get more on eli lilly and the choices in the obesity drug market.joined by the director of research for bloomberg intelligence. what did you make of the announcement from the fbi yesterday? >> the approval was expected. this product has been on the market in some form for diabetes for several years. what was interesting was the pricing, of course. what we have to be careful with is when you see these comments about we will price it at this and that. that is the list price. what happens in terms of rebates is what really matters. alix: it is like machinery orders. sam: so i would expect -- that was interesting because you thought they are coming at 20% discount, but novo nordisk is up yesterday. the problem is, the issue is -- everybody expects the net price to be similar. guy: sam, how long will these committees have pricing power for? sam: oh, i think pharma companies with these massive drugs generally lose pricing power. we estimate that the rebate, the discount on we go v is around 55%. now with these two drugs approved for obesity, the insurance

[laughter] eli lilly, please.e popularity, what's the fda saying? lauren: the fda has expanded the use of this drug to treat obesity, and it's going to be the sold under the name, get used to this one, zepbound. eli lilly can promote this to lose weight, and all you need to show is that your body mass index is 30. i mean, technically you're overweight, but that's not a crazy number. and this also mean that insurance companies and health planses have to cover it. at what cost. the the list price is $1,060 per month. and truest, the brokerage, is saying that there could be 40% of u.s. adults that could be eligible for this drug. >> probably more than that. my bmi's 24, and i think i'm pretty lean and mean, okay? so if only another 6 percentage points above, that's a lot of people. stuart: i like to -- how do you calculate your biomass -- lauren: the doctor. >> go to your doctor. you can't do it. lauren: it's not the end-all, be-all of anything, but it is one measure, and they're obviously using it. and just to put e

this thing can cause dramatic weight loss as much as 18% of your body mass i prefer the stock of eli lillyy's drug is a lot cheaper we will talk more about it at wednesday's investing club meeting at noon. i do hope you will join the club, at least tune into the meeting so when i see analysts talking about how insurance companies won't pay for revolutionary weight loss drugs i want to scream they look at the list price and the average patient with obesity and then figure the drugs will be too expensive versus the savings in the system from a healthier customer base? not all patients are created equal, and i think there are many groups that the insurance companies will be downright eager to cover first, if you have diabetes and the potential for diabetes the companies want you to take these drugs immediately, erspecially during the pandemic which hit diabetics especially hard and it put you at risk for many other deceases if your insurance company can nip it in the bud, believe me, they would be happy to pay success, if you're obese and your blood pressure is very high, say anything greater
