elijah cummings, you may know, elijah's roots in south carolina.amily were a part of brown v. board of education which at the time was briggs v. elliott and elijah and i used to talk about it all the time. and when he got elected to congress i had a big homecoming for elijah. brought him back to mount zero baptist church where his grandfather was a member and these two guys meant so much to me. i used to sit on the floor and talk to them all the time. and elijah passed away, it was just -- you know, john and i, our relationship was great. but elijah and i used to talk about our roots in the county and south carolina and how that personalized our relationships. so on a personal basis i was very close to elijah. and when i spoke at his service there in the capitol i talked about that because we were both what we call pk-ers. preacher's kids so he had the challenge of growing up with the obstacles of being the preacher's kid. so he and i were very, very close. to serve with these two guys in the united states congress was just a remarkable experience.
