joining me now, maryland democratic congressman, elijah cummin cummings.e have unemployment numbers coming out tomorrow, and historically the rate in the minority communities have bench higher, and many of your constituencies are facing a higher unemployment rate than the rest of the country. what are you expecting tomorrow? perhaps there has been some improvement because of temporary hiring for the census takers, but what are you feeling back home now? >> well, sitting on the joint economic committee, i do expect the numbers are going to be better tomorrow. but what i am hearing is that people are elated -- when i say that, they are extremely happy. i represent a diverse bank. -- area. and they told me stories where they treat poor kids and they tell me a lot of these kids were being -- some of them were being thrown off of their policies or whatever because of a preexisting condition that was found while they were treating them for some severe dental problem. a lot of people happy about that, and people want to go back to work. on the last report with re

i've been joined by 59 of my colleagues, and elijah cummings and i have sent a letter to the f.c.c. saying, ok, you uncovered one case of alleged fraud by the securities and exchange commission where they knowingly sold a bad product to investors and then they bet against it themselves. there were a number of others that went through something called a.i.g. which the federal government also bailed out in a cost of $180 billion to taxpayers. we want every transaction between goldman and a.i.g. scrutinized to see whether or not any of those were similarly fraudulent transactions in which case we could get a few billions of dollars back from the lords of finance to the taxpayers in main street, u.s.a. it's long past time to begin these kinds of investigations and hopefully, ultimately, like with enron, because this is worse than enron, prosecution and we'll let some of them enjoy some federal hospitality for a few years. this is absolutely outrageous. they're creating products designed to fail, that have no useful products. in fact, robbing capital from companies who want to invest, to

now i'd like to recognize elijah cummings. mr. cummings: i want to thank the gentlelady for yielding and i want to thank all my colleagues for being here tonight. as i listened to my colleagues this evening, i could not help but think that the american people have lost in at least two ways. one, they have lost with regard to investments, money that they could be making on the market. and, two, they've lost because the so-called swaps that were purchased, these insurance -- what we would call insurance, for those people who would be listening, mr. speaker, some of that money, particularly the ones that we're dealing with right now were bought from a.i.g. and a.i.g., when these bonds went down, a.i.g. ended up paying. and folks may be asking the question, what does that have to do with me? well, the fact is that when those bonds were paid off, those are the kinds of -- because they were paid off from a.i.g., just like an insurance policy would pay, a lot of money had to go into a.i.g. to keep it propped up to the tune of $280 billio
