elisa raffa. thank you so much. let's get an update right now from michael brennan he's the director of the national hurricane center. michael. michael, if you could walk us through the latest information you have yeah. >> well, helene continues to strengthen tonight, maximum sustained winds now up to about 125 miles per hour. we can see the eye of helene and radar imagery about 130 miles west of tampa of the forward speed of helene continues to increase it's now moving north northeast at 23 miles per hour and that's going to bring the center of the hurricane to the coast just in the big bend region later this evening and is going to bring this multiple life-threatening seeing impacts catastrophic storm surge devil, devastating hurricane force winds that are going to spread well inland up into places, into portions of georgia. and tropical storm conditions well up north into the carolinas the potential for catastrophic flooding from heavy rainfall across much of the southeastern us at into the southern appalachians.

cnn meteorologist elisa raffa has more details on the potential severe weather. >> we're watching a tropicalturbance that could soon gain the name francine in the next 48 hours or so. right now, the center is kind of disorganized, but if you look at where it's sitting in parts of the gulf of mexico, you've got ocean temperatures there that are incredibly warm, nearing the low 90s. and if you look at its path that it could take as it heads towards the u.s. gulf coast, it's going to take this ride through some very warm ocean temperatures in the middle 80s, even some upper 80s. so what that's going to do is help it organize and strengthen pretty quickly, especially as we head into the workweek. we could be looking at some tropical storm force conditions along the texas coastline as early as late tuesday, and then this thing could ride the coastline towards louisiana. as we go into wednesday, bringing with it the threat for some heavy rain, some storm surge, and rough surf as well. when we look at recent name storms that have made landfall in this part of the country, i mean, we had beryl make

and gusty winds will worsen and make conditions very difficult for first responders, meteorologist elisa rafah is tracking the latest from the cnn extreme weather center. so how unusual is that for this to be happening at this time of year, the heat is so unusual on what the heat does, is it dries out those fuels and we've had temperatures well into the triple digits ten to 20 degrees above normal for southern california, we get a temperature of 112 degrees the other day in l.a. for one and the third time in history since the 1800s, it gets either warnings are still in effect from los angeles down to san diego, 25 million people under these excessive heat alerts here, you've got temperatures still up around 100 degrees through sunday and monday in l.a in way above the average of the upper 70s. so some triple-digit heat and paul i'm springs in phoenix and las vegas temperatures all out 100 degrees or hotter on top of this, we also have some very dry air you've got that relative humidity down to five to 15% and winds are gusting up to 40 miles per hour or so. again, that just makes these f
