cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington now in downtown oakland to show us some of the damage on this monday. >> reporter: good morning. a broken bottle on the ground paint splashed on the glass and just about every, single window broken. other buildings suffered similar damage including city hall following an antiwar rally. about 200 demonstrators met at frank ogawa plaza for a march through downtown to mark the 11th anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan. by 8:15 they dispersed. then there was vandalism on various buildings in the area. oakland residents are fed up with this type of behavior that costs the city money. >> it doesn't make any sense. the bank doesn't have anything to do with the war. oakland has enough budget problems that this creates more problems in oakland when oakland is not the place make the decisions. they need to gowashington or to go to washington or other areas. >> reporter: there is a lot of clean-up to do. elissa harrington, cbs 5. >>> police in san francisco arresting 20 -- arresting 20 people over the weekend after vandalism on saturday afternoon. o

elissa harrington is out in the middle of the rain. looks like just light showers but watch out, elissa, heavier rains coming your way. >> reporter: just what i wanted to hear. out here in corte madera, there's a lot of localized flooding a big puddle as drivers head on 101 north and we're also dealing with wind. check the flag across the street. it's wet, windy and cold, about 52 degrees where we are. now, the bay area is waking up to the first significant rain in the season. chp is asking for people to keep their speeds down. some flooding areas are larkspur, oakland, calistoga and antioch. there's actually been an accident in oakland. give yourselves plenty of extra time to drive, drive slow, keep space between you and the car in front of you. also tap your brakes to avoid hydroplaning. it's not affecting traffic yet. if you look at 101 you can see cars are moving swiftly but across the way you can see our caltrans vehicle. there have been crews out here this morning monitoring the area making sure that they clear out any lanes that

cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in downtown oakland where the damage is still being assessed. >> reporter: good morning, we're here on 20th and franklin where it happened. on the ground you can see a broken beer bottle, paint splashed across the california bank and trust branch, windows broken a lot of them now boarded up. i counted 12 of these large glass windows with some damage. the same thing with businesses across the street. this all happened yesterday. these protestors trashed several blocks in downtown oakland but it all started as an antiwar rally. protestors marking the 11th anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan. a group of about 200 left from frank ogawa plaza for a march around 7:00 but by 8:15 they had dispersed and went on a vandalism spree. city hall was damaged, protestors smashing the windows. they damaged a half dozen other businesses including the "oakland tribune" offices, three banks, a kaiser permanente and a.c. transit office and the oakland scientific facility. you're seeing damage on the corner and they covered about three blocks in the downt

its pipes in the bay area are safe but there is no proof they were tested and cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in concord where one of these unsuspected pipes actually lies. elissa. >> reporter: we're talking about miles of pipeline running throughout the east bay and san jose. pg&e said that these lines had been checked and that they were safe. but they admitted to the "san francisco chronicle" yesterday that they don't have the documents to back that up. now, there are questions that these lines were ever inspected. here's where they are. we're talking about 4.5 miles of at-risk natural gas pipeline in martinez, newark, fremont and san jose. under federal law, these lines should having inspected years ago by 2007. pg&e said these lines were safe because that's what employees told regulators. but while reviewing inspection history of these lines, the company found no records to confirm those checks. a pg&e spokesman told the "san francisco chronicle" that recordkeeping is not what it should have been. poor recordkeeping is part of what led to that 2010 pipeline explosion in san bruno. docu

cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in san francisco with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this case has been playing out at city hall for months now. mirkarimi has been fighting for his job. the mayor wants him out and it's up to the board of supervisors who will vote today and decide whether he stays or goes. what happens could set a precedent for misconduct cases in the future. sheriff ross mirkarimi was elected into office back last fall. he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor related to a domestic violence dispute that left his wife with a bruised arm. that incident happened on new year's eve. now nine months later we could find out if he stays or goes for official misconduct. his wife eliana lopez showed her neighbor a bruised arm which you can see in this video after her husband grabbed her during an argument. mirkarimi was sentenced to three years' probation, fined and ordered to undergo counseling. he was also placed on unpaid leave by mayor ed lee. since then, mirkarimi has been fighting for his job. his attorney says that the

cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington at sfo this morning to tell us what passengers can expect if they have flights today. elissa. >> reporter: frank, passengers can expect more cancellations at all three bay area airports. this storm has crippled air travel grounding nearly 14,000 flights stranding travelers. more than 200 flights have been canceled out of sfo alone. destinations affected include hubs like jfk, boston, washington, d.c., philadelphia and newark. about a quarter of flights in the united states pass in and out of new york so travelers all over are feeling a ripple effect. even if you're not trying to fly to the east coast, you still need to check your flight status. in fact, yesterday i spoke with a woman trying to get to boise, idaho. her flight was cancelled because of the domino effect. even overseas travelers have had to deal with cancellations so at sfo, so far more than 200 flights canceled out of oakland jetblue flights to new york and d.c. were canceled. in san jose, two jetblue flights to boston and jfk have been canceled through wednesday. >> given the fact that the

elissa harrington told us what made the fire extremely dangerous. she joins us with the latest good morning. >> reporter: good morning when firefighters first arrived there was one way in and one way out, the front door. inside you can see rows and release of restaurant supply -- rows of restaurant supplies stacked on top of each other. you're looking at piles of plates and other items. it tore through the building at 12:30 this morning. this is a warehouse type of building off old country road and washington street. firefighters are on scene securing the building and checking for hot spots. when they first arrived they found heavy smoke coming from inside the business. they called out a 3 alarm bringing about 40 firefighters to assist. the 24 hour fitness next door was evacuated but the fire did not spread and nobody was hurt. >> a lot of material inside the business for the running of the business pretty heavily loaded that kind of contributed to the stubbornness of the fire and us getting to it. >> reporter: overhead sprinklers inside of the busi

cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington was at the scene of one of those raids as it happened. >> reporter: oakland police might be one step closer to solving a murder that happened almost a year ago. officers along with s.w.a.t. and several outside agencies arrested four people at four different locations while serving high risk search warrants early this morning. >> they are dangerous and in residences where firearms are linked, these individuals that may be present. >> reporter: one of the raids at this home on east 20th and 13th, this is the same area where back in january, four people were shot. 20-year-old jordan chit died. police believe these arrests are tied to the shooting. >> diligent police working officers and investigators have identified these suspects and with successfully articulate probable cause to a magistrate who agreed and they have been arrested. >> reporter: investigators suspect january's shooting was gang-related. they won't say exactly what led them to make the arrests today and what evidence they have. so the house we were at today was a few blocks away from wher

at sfo, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> sandy's impact is also expected to be felt online. not necessarily now, but by the next week. cbs 5 reporter mark sayre on how the problems in new york could spread across the country. mark. >> reporter: well, dana, flooding and also power outages at important data centers in new york took some popular websites like the huffington post and others offline today and the problems could expand even though the storm has now moved on. while the flooded streets and buildings of new york city might be the most obvious signs of the severity of the storm, there could be an impact well beyond the actual storm region. new york is one of the biggest hubs of internet connectivity in the world and the full extent of the damage is likely not yet known. >> most of the computing equipment is above ground so what we are talking about being destroyed is the networking equipment that's underground. >> reporter: the enterally group a silicon valley-based high-tech consulting firm says it could be a few days to see how bad the problem is. >> if much of that

elissa harrington is hanging out. is doppler radar working this morning? >> reporter: it is. the rain is coming down hard here and we are in corte madera along lucky drive where we are seeing localized flooding including here as you go on to the entrance to 101 north. so the california highway patrol is urging drivers to reduce speed below the posted limit throughout the marin area because of flooded freeway sections. now, this is the first significant rainfall of the season and it is causing some major problems throughout the bay area. here are some other areas drivers should be aware of. there is flooding in larkspur on 101 northbound, sir francis drake. also in oakland, flooding on 880 south at 980 west and standing water on 580 at highway 24. expect delays there. the right lane and shoulder are affected. also, in calistoga avoid the area on highway 29 before tubbs lane. the lanes are blocked. some of the biggest problems in antioch. there is a sig alert on highway 4 at hillcrest because of flooding. this is the first rain we're seeing in quite a while so drivers take it e

cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is live in oakland where the family of one of the victims is speaking out. elissa. >> reporter: that's right. the family members want to remember this man as a father who worked the graveyard shift trying to get his g.e.d. to get a better life. you can see broken glass left behind from the latest shooting where two men were sitting inside a car when they were approached by somebody else on foot. >> my son was a good kid. he kind of like stayed to his self. >> reporter: family members robert dell, jr., tearfully looked through pictures of the 23-year-old with his 2-year-old son. >> i know he don't understand yet, but it's going to break my heart when he come over here and say, where my dad at? >> reporter: dell died one of four victims of gun violence in oakland overnight in three shootings. the latest happened around 6 a.m. on the 1600 block of 72nd avenue. dell and a friend were inside this minivan. >> the victims were inside the parked vehicle when they were approached by a suspect who was armed with a gun. >> reporter: there was an argument. the susp
