ktvu's elissa harrington. what you know about what happened out there? >> >> reporter: a tow truck just remove the vehicle but look at this damage. this is the structure that the driver slammed into around 3:15 this morning. firefighters say that for unknown reasons the driver crashed into the structure at the chevron gas station right on the corner. this is part of the system that controls the vapors. that car caught on fire. the driver was pinned inside. firefighters had to extinguish the flames and then they use tools to tear the roof off the of the vehicle that we were addressing. as you can imagine the access was limited. so we managed in that situation at the same time we were exiting watching the fire. the man was injured. firefighters pulled them out and put him on a stretcher. he is now being treated at s.f. general hospital. police did have this intersection shut down for about an hour because the crash also caused a gas leak. that leak has been stopped. crews have reopen the intersection. the cause of this crash remains under investigation. li

elissa harrington joins us live with more on the story. morning, alyssa. >> reporter: good morning. i just heard from the fire department and they told me that when they arrived, they found a small fire in the carport area. they said the residents here actually put it out themselves with a fire extinguisher, but they noticed too what they called suspicious canisters. at that point, they called the bomb squad to take a look at what was going on. they determine the safest course of action would be to explode those canisters in a controlled manner. that is why they had to evacuate a large part of this apartment complex. they said everybody was back in their homes by about 2 am once they determined there was no threat. this all started last night at around 10:15 pm. residents did have to be evacuated at one point. many of them woke up when this fire first started. they fought it themselves. some described a strange smell like rubber. neighbors reported seeing suspicious canisters and broken glass. one woman who said she did not want her face on camera said she called 911. >> i woke up,
