elissa harrington his life for us at the international terminal at sfo this morning. >> the reason they are doing health checks is because it is one of the airports here in the u.s. with direct flights from china which is where this outbreak started. this coronavirus is a respiratory virus that has already killed two people and sickened dozens of others. sfo, lax and jfk are the three airports that will screen passengers. jfk and sfo the only u.s. airport with direct flights from china. those being screened at lax or from connecting flights and the centers for disease control will begin health exams today so passengers arriving will get there temperature taken, health screening before allowed to pass through customs and they will also be asked to fill out a questionnaire asking if they have experienced any symptoms. the symptoms are similar to the flu, fever, runny nose and sore throat. a spokesperson said china southern airlines operates the direct flights. >> connecting for nonstop passengers would be diverted to a separate area inside the customs facility where they would go through

elissa harrington, you've been out there for several hours so what do you know about what happened? >> reporter: good morning. the driver slammed into the structure behind me. this stricture houses different machinery for the pumps used for the venting. i want to show you chevron is closed this morning. the pumps shut down. there was actually a gas leak a little bit earlier so police had to close the intersection. it has since been reopened around 3:15 this morning. the driver slammed into the station and the car caught on fire. firefighters had to use tools to get into the vehicle and pry the roof off of the car to free the driver. >> we had 33 firefighters respond to the incident, and it was necessary to remove, as you can see, the roof of the car, to extricate the individual. even once the roof was removed, they were pinned in the car. we had very good crews who did a good job to get them out of there. >> reporter: firefighters did eventually rescue the driver. nobody else was in the car. it's unknown what the driver's injuries are or what led to this crash. that person crashed i

elissa harrington reports from the scene. >> reporter: for a long line street and avenue on treasured and you can see car parts all over the ground for the driver slammed into the tree and also took out a bus shelter. the car came to rest across the street. this is what is left of the portion involved in a crash. in pieces, one of the seats lying on the street. police say this crash happened around 11:30 on treasure island near avenue h and ninth street. the driver of the car first hit and occupied vehicle and continued eastbound. >> the vehicle continued to go eastbound on ninth street and struck a tree where the driver was then ejected from his vehicle. >> reporter: driver was pronounced dead at the scene. large pieces of the car and other debris littered the road. police don't know what caused the driver to lose control. >> were speaking with a number of eyewitnesses and try to gather as many pieces of the incident as we can. investigations like this, it is like eating together a puzzle. >> reporter: officer robert said witnesses heard the vehicle speeding away. people saw that dr

ktvu's elissa harrington. what you know about what happened out there? >> >> reporter: a tow truck just remove the vehicle but look at this damage. this is the structure that the driver slammed into around 3:15 this morning. firefighters say that for unknown reasons the driver crashed into the structure at the chevron gas station right on the corner. this is part of the system that controls the vapors. that car caught on fire. the driver was pinned inside. firefighters had to extinguish the flames and then they use tools to tear the roof off the of the vehicle that we were addressing. as you can imagine the access was limited. so we managed in that situation at the same time we were exiting watching the fire. the man was injured. firefighters pulled them out and put him on a stretcher. he is now being treated at s.f. general hospital. police did have this intersection shut down for about an hour because the crash also caused a gas leak. that leak has been stopped. crews have reopen the intersection. the cause of this crash remains under investigation. li

and once elissa harrington is in symphysis go police headquarters. they are investigating. >> reporter: i just got an update from sf pd. they told me what happened on treasure island was unusual. this driver was going at such a high rate of speed, crashing into a tree that crash also taking out a bus shelter. i will show you some video of the scene. this happened on avenue h by ninth street just before midnight when san francisco police were called. the driver of a white porsche first struck a parked car down the road. after that happened, the driver sped away. the driver continued eastbound on ninth street and slammed into a tree at a very high rate of speed. the car actually ended up across the street. there was debris scattered across several lanes of traffic so they had to close down part of avenue h for several hours this morning to clear the scene. just before we left, a to talk tow truck came in remove the vehicle and reopened the road. i spoke with police moments ago who told me they are investigating what caused the driver to crash. >> this

elissa harrington is there to bring us the latest. alyssa? >> reporter: morning. i want to show you the parked car behind me just to give you an idea of the scene this driver speed this driver was going with aggression to a tree. you can see we are looking at tires. the porsche slammed into a tree and took out the shelter. debris was scattered all over lanes of traffic. this happened near ninth street. san francisco police were called just before midnight. police say the driver of a white porsche first struck a parked car a block or two away. and then it sped away. the driver continued eastbound and slammed into a tree. they were pronounced dead at the scene. the video shows a car in pieces. we are told the driver was ejected from the vehicle. the name of the driver has not been released. we don't know where that person is from. all police say is that the driver was a man. we are expected to get more information a little bit later on this morning. you can see there are cleanup crews clearing all the debris from lanes of traffic. they have since reopened avenue eig

elissa harrington joins us live with more on the story. morning, alyssa. >> reporter: good morning. i just heard from the fire department and they told me that when they arrived, they found a small fire in the carport area. they said the residents here actually put it out themselves with a fire extinguisher, but they noticed too what they called suspicious canisters. at that point, they called the bomb squad to take a look at what was going on. they determine the safest course of action would be to explode those canisters in a controlled manner. that is why they had to evacuate a large part of this apartment complex. they said everybody was back in their homes by about 2 am once they determined there was no threat. this all started last night at around 10:15 pm. residents did have to be evacuated at one point. many of them woke up when this fire first started. they fought it themselves. some described a strange smell like rubber. neighbors reported seeing suspicious canisters and broken glass. one woman who said she did not want her face on camera said she called 911. >> i woke up,

elissa harrington reports. >> reporter: i've had a chance to speak with palo alto police. officers are in the process of reviewing surveillance footage. there also speaking with a pharmacist to find out what exactly was taken. this man was stocking shelves at the 24 hour safeway on middlefield road in palo alto around 12:30 in the morning when three men entered the store. one had a gun, and ordered him to the ground. >> i wanted to see what was happening. i saw this other guy. he said get down on the floor. >> reporter: the others went straight to the pharmacy. they smashed a glass door to get inside. >> once they broke inside, they stole an undisclosed amount of narcotics. then they fled. >> reporter: police say they fled in a red pickup truck. the armed suspect was wearing a gray hoodie and red shoes. a second suspect was in a yellow sweatshirt with the tommy hilfiger logo on it. the third suspect was in a red hooded jacket. nobody was hurt, and no customers were inside. >> obviously it's unsettling. this is happening all over the place. palo alto remains one of the safe

elissa harrington live at bayshore bullington where the body was found. alyssa, what can you tell us? >> reporter: police were on scene for hours. in fact, they just let. but only moments ago they were walking those trucks right behind me by the muni shelter. what we know this morning is that police are investigating because they say that the driver of this muni did not stop after hitting the pedestrian. we also saw officials walking on the tracks taking pictures and measurements. they say they will review video from inside of the train to try to find out why that driver did not stop and see if the driver reacted at all after the train struck that person. this happened just before 2 am. so, it was dark out. but this intersection is actually pretty well lit. the muni car was taken to the railyard where it is being looked at. police were seen there as well. we don't know who the victim was this morning. but again, investigators and officials were out here for several hours. they are also cleaning up the tracks. we don't know how this is impacting muni servi

elissa harrington is live, and you spoke with one of the workers? >> reporter: good morning.hat's right. this is a 24-hour safe way. police say no customers were inside at the time, but there were plenty of employees. i spoke with one man who said he was stocking shelves after midnight when two men entered wearing hoodies, one of them had a gun. >> i just went to see what happened and that's when i saw the guy and he pointed to me said and get down on the floor. >> that man said he was forced to the floor and he said the suspects went straight to the pharmacy, which was closed at the time, but they broke the glass door and stole several items. the employee we spoke with said they were inside the building for about five minutes and he's unsure exactly what they got away with. palo alto police said they stole several drugs. now even though that man said he saw two people, palo alto police say they are searching for three suspicious. they are looking at surveillance video from inside of the safe way to get a better look at those suspects. investigators were here for several hour
