elizabeth keckly. this was a black woman who was born into slavery in missouri and eventually bought her freedom. she had a very serendipitous live, and she just kind of encountered all kinds of historic characters just out of the way she lived. as it turns out, the person who she was enslaved to in missouri was one of the lawyers who argued at the supreme court, the dred scott case. the dred scott decision was the 1857 supreme court decision that, among things, said blacks have no whites are pound to respect, and it also said slavery is fine. she just was connected with that just out of being connected. but she bought her freedom, came to washington, d.c. in 1860 and one of the first -- and she started her own business. she made dresses. she was, apparently, really great at it. one of her first customers was vania davis, the wife of jefferson davis who became president of the confederacy. now, in 1860, at the end of 1860 after washington was elected, all the southern senators and representatives start

elizabeth, good morning. >>> reporter: good morning.you have driven across the bay bridge recently, you have seen the towe going up. it's going to 495 feet of its total 525 feet this morning. let's go to computer animation video provided to us from caltrains. it's on their website if you want to check it out of what this project is all about. this is a little different from the previous four tower lifts which were comprised of four individual sections. this latest lift is just a single segment and will sit atop four legs. this section is known as grillage. it will hold a mile-long single cable over the tower. it's nicknamed the grillage of internal steel that gives the appearance of grill grates. the latest tower section arrived in february. when completed the tower will be the signature element of the new eastern span. crews will hoist the grillage 500 feet into the air so amazing stuff and amazingly even more caltrans hopes to have it all done in just one day. so this is all supposed to start around 10 a.m. now, after today's work, we
