elizabeth leonard, history department chair at colby college and specialist in civil war america. we are taking your telephones calls. i'm going to give thank you phone numbers. we are getting great questions tonight. 202-737-0001 for eastern and central time zones. we welcome your involvement in this. tell me about maine -- little bit more about maine and this time period. we talked about earlier on about him coming here as a young man. how difficult would it have been for him to establish himself? >> i think that he had a very good connection with his wife's family. they were a prominent family here in augusta. and actually that connection for him to become the editor of the journal was essentially made by family and friends who wanted his wife back here and also wanted to make that opportunity available to him as well. he came really at a perfect time. 1850 az, decade just before the civil war. maine is really at a zenith of prosperity and there is a -- recession in the late 1850s. generally speaking, maine is really cresting in both its economic and its political force at that

elizabeth? >> reporter: hi, jenna. that man, 22-year-old, desmonte leonard, the front page of the local newspaper totally dedicated asking the public's help to find him. police say he is responsible for the deadliest shooting in the city's history. there is $15,000 reward for finding him. police are focusing on montgomery county which is 60 miles from here. remember this is a man who police say opened fire at a pool party on saturday evening, shooting six men, killing three of them. half of his victims were members of the tigers football team, former or current members of the tigers football team. we spoke weather the police chief earlier. he had a very emotional response to the event this weekend. listen here. >> the worst shooting of occurred in auburn. it is a tragedy, and at the same time you have to do your job as a police officer here in auburn but you're a human being too. so you're, you're still hurting. you think about the families of those deceased ones this morning. think about the young man in irm about ham fighting for his life. >> reporter: now remember, all six of his victims were under the legal drinking
