our correspondent, elizabeth palmer is in london with the latest.ood morning. >> reporter: good morning. both president obama and secretary of state clinton have publicly thanked the government of the gulf state of ohman, which has emerged as a really key player in securing the release of sarah shourd. in the arms of her family, safely in the capital, sarah shourd's thoughts immediately turned back to iran and the two young americans she left behind in a tehran jail. >> all of my efforts, starting today, are going to go into helping procure the same freedom for my fiance, shane bauer and for my friend josh fattal, because i can't enjoy my freedom without them. >> reporter: the three were traveling companions, on tour in kurdistan where, in july 2009, they were arrested, allegedly for crossing the iranian border illegally. they were all sent to jail. the last time they were seen together in public was in may when their mothers were allowed a brief visit. it was then that shourd announced she and bauer would marry. shourd still in oman this morning ha

elizabeth palmer in london, thanks. >> now to the latest on the california gas explosion. that killed at least four people. most residents of the neighborhood in san bruno near san francisco have finally been able to return four days after the blast. the rest could be let back in today. david clements is at the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. crews are working around the clock to try to clear rubble so residents can get in and survey the damage to homes. now some of the homes here have been red tagged which means they are completely uninhabitable. the owners can't go inside. others have been leveled, destroyed to the ground. a lucky few yesterday were told they could go home. >> we'll give you a packet what to do. >> reporter: at a makeshift command center sunday morning, residents of the leveled neighborhood waited to find out when they could go back home. >> i want to look at my house for five minutes. >> reporter: the explosion destroyed 40 and damaged hundreds. investigators continue to search for the cause. >> we don't know at this point whether there

for more on this release we're going to go to london and elizabeth palmer is standing by.jeff. yeah, the details are very sketchy because it's literally just happened in the last few minutes. now, we've spoke to sarah shourd's lawyer just a few minutes ago and he's confirmed it. he was in the prison finishing off the paperwork, and after that, sarah shourd is going to be taken to the swiss embassy. because the u.s. has no embassy in tehran, the swiss look after american affairs there. from there, it's presumed that she will leave iran almost immediately and be reunited with her family. now, this has confounded everybody, because, as you'll recall yesterday, the iranians had said we are going to release her, but only on half a million dollars bail. and there were various questions associated with that, for example it wasn't clear her family could raise the money. and also, simply transferring the money to iran was problematic because of the u.s. sanctions. now, sarah shourd is free. but her two hiker companions are still in jail. and the iranian prosecutor over the weekend
