"these kids committed no crime," he says. "they were unarmed. they just wanted to learn." this is exactly where that lethal mortar fell. 7:45 in the morning in a perfectly ordinary residential street in government-held aleppo. and the kids who were hurt and killed, they were just walking along on their way to school. nearby, the men of telal neighborhood are cleaning up after a rocket smashed into this street and killed another 5-year-old boy. it's been an especially violent 48 hours in aleppo, with bombs and artillery thundering down on the rebel-occupied eas

elizabeth palmer is just back from syria, and holly williams is in northern iraq tonight. let's begin with what trump said about the white house announcing its mosul plan in advance. >> whatever happened to the element of surprise? okay. we announce we're going after mosul. after mosul now for about-- how long is it, hillary, three months? these people have all left. they've all left. >> pelley: so, holly, is trump right? >> reporter: well, scott, i think secrecy would have been very, very difficult. this is a multinational effort, not just the u.s., and most of the thousands of fighters on the front lines here are from iraq, from different factions, ethnic and religious groups. remember, also, making it public mosul, who are being usinged as human shields, a chance to try to escape, or perhaps to prepare to rise up against isis. >> pelley: holly, trump also said advanced warning gave the leaders of isis a chance to escape mosul. what about that? >> reporter: well, scott, we were on the front line today, and isis was definitely firing back. they are laying roadside bombs.

civilian rescue workers were among the targets, and elizabeth palmer continues her rare look inside aleppo. >> reporter: once again, bombs fell on eastern aleppo and once again, the rescuers, known as the white helmets, did manage to save some lives. one of the strikes was a so-called double tap. the second bomb exploding just digging out victims from the first. there are no words for the grief that comes literally out of the blue. families torn apart in an instant. since the start of the week, more than 60 people have been killed. this is eastern aleppo 13 months after the russians joined the syrians in a bombing campaign. some of the targets would have been military, including rebel but so many have been civilian. hospitals, bakeries, water pumping stations. the objective may be to make life so miserable, that people are forced out. it has worked before. for three years, the syrian military besieged and attacked part of another city, homs, until 2014 a broken and terrified population surrendered, and the opposition last month, president bashar al-assad, in a rare public appearance, said
