kpix 5's elizabeth wenger joins us live from santa clara where work on the facility has been suspended for today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. all is clear here an empty construction sight now for the second day. grief counselors will also be made available to the victims' coworkers family and friends. 1,000 workers left the job early yesterday. that deadly accident happened shortly after the workday started. the victim was 63-year-old donald white. he was an elevator mechanic, father of four. he was working in the bottom of an elevator shaft when, according to cal osha, a counter weight came down on him. the $1.2 billion stadium project broke ground about a year ago. there was only one other accident, a worker broke his foot last year. what went wrong this time now being investigated. >> we're looking at grief counselors. so right now the site is shut down. we have accounted for all the other workers on site. and they have been relieved to go home. >> reporter: the victim works for schindler elevator company out of san leandro. three separate agencies are also conducting i

elizabeth wenger has been looking at traffic around the bay area. elizabeth. >> thanks, ken. i got to say it's still not as bad as this morning. the worst appears to be over so far. of course it is still early. typically it's kind of "friday light" on a friday afternoon. not the case today. traffic is definitely a little bit busier than usual especially coming up new yor 101 -- northbound 101. they are all trying to get home heading towards the lower deck of the bay bridge. the on-ramps where ken was sterling street, harrison and first street on-ramps are backed up. avoid th embarcadero as well because of critical mass at justin herman plaza. we have america's cup concert series at pier 27. so the backups on 101 begin at alemany. it's also jammed up on eastbound 580 and eastbound 24. bart so far we have not heard about any problems. but there are speed restrictions at least for the eastbound trains so right now we are getting word of about 10- minute delays getting out of san francisco heading towards the east bay. so from what we can tell, it's busy but i think a lot of folk

kpix 5's elizabeth wenger is here to talk about changes on the way. elizabeth? >> i hope you enjoyed it today. it's hard to believe with all the sunshine and blue skies we could be talking about bringing the umbrellas back out of the closet but it's true. we have a rainmaker coming our way. high pressure is weakening as we speak over the bay area but right now temperatures are already in the mild side. santa rosa still at 88 degrees and 73 in oakland and 83 is what you're clocking in right now at heyward. so we are closely watching a couple low pressure systems. one in the northwest and another out over the pacific. and the biggest difference you'll notice tomorrow. the clouds and the cooler temperatures. today, some places reached into the 90s. not the case tomorrow. highest temperatures in our inland spots are only going to be in the mid- to upper 70s and a chance of some rain light rain tomorrow. likely in the later half of the day and pretty much sticking tot north bay. but -- to the north bay. but then move further south spreading around the entire bay area

elizabeth wenger is here to tell us. >> yes we should be able to especially in the imland spots. right now clear skies over the bay. there could be some marine layer forming over the coasts. your best bet is to hit the inland spots but the real weather maker doesn't begin until tomorrow. so checking out the numbers right now. 87 degrees in concord. it is still 90 degrees in santa rosa. just a gorgeous second full day of summer across the bay area. you can cool off in san francisco. coming in at 64 degrees. see how the clouds, they are on the move and they're getting closer to the bay area but right now high pressure remains in effect. and that low we're actually watching a couple of lows just off the coast bringing a good chance of rain by late tomorrow. starting in the north bay and then spreading south over the rest of the bay area and continuing into monday and tuesday. so we'll time it out and show you how much rain we're expecting coming up. in the meantime ann back to you. >>> thank you elizabeth. >> sitting on top of the world. >> a small plane crashes and explodes into fl

. >> i'm elizabeth wenger. frank has the morning off. time now is 5:00. >>> new this morning, an east bay boy is dead after being mauled by a dog. the dog attack happened at a home on elizabeth way in union city yesterday. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in the neighborhood this morning with more. >> reporter: very tragic story. a 6-year-old boy died here in union city yesterday morning after being attacked by a dog. we are waiting for more details this morning from union city police, but we have confirmed the death, apparently the boy was attacked by the dog, a pit bull or pit bull mix. the boy was taken to lucille packard children's hospital yesterday afternoon where he died. the pit bull has been taken into custody, which is normal after an incident like this. there is usually a waiting period where it is determined whether or not the dog is a danger to society. but this family dealing with a terrible tragedy this morning. anne makovec, kpix 5. >>> a nurse may have been saved by a device she was wearing when she was attacked at work. i

. >>> elizabeth wenger joins us from the traffic center to show us the road conditions right now. >> reporter: sometimes the friday commute is a breeze, certainly not the case today. let's show you the worst of it. here's a live look from chopper 5 as all those people are trying to head home trying to get towards the east bay. so it is jammed solid on northbound 101 from the 280 interchange all the way out towards the lower deck. and you have the critical mass bike ride the monthly bike ride kicking off in san francisco any minute now over by justin herman plaza. let's get a check of the road sensors. again, northbound 101 it looks backed up from at least alemany and then once you get to the east bay, it's slow going on eastbound 580 and eastbound 24 all the way out towards the caldecott tunnel. so once again the transbay tube is completely reopened, but we're still seeing delays for bart riders for this evening commute and nothing like this morning. but about 10-minute delays because they are running trains a little slower in the eastbound direction. we'll give you another update on

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm elizabeth wenger. frank is off. >>> we begin with a traffic alert in san francisco. a motorcycle crash set down multiple lanes on southbound 101. let's get straight to liza with more. >> reporter: the chp has issued a warning of big delays south 101 just beyond the avenue. we'll go to those pictures. multiple lanes are shut down by this accident involving a downed motorcyclist and a shuttle bus. one lane of traffic open so this is going to cause big delays for drivers leaving san francisco bound for the peninsula. currently traffic is backed up beyond cesar chavez and if chp can't clear up lanes soon don't be surprised if it backs up traffic toward the upper deck of the bay bridge. traffic just bumper to bumper now in san francisco along south 101. your alternate take 280 instead to get towards the peninsula. southbound 280 looking okay. the 880/237 interchange in the silicon valley is slowing down on the left-hand side of the screen you can see southbound 880 leading to 237 that's going to be slow for

for more on the roadways, let's go to elizabeth wenger. >> thanks, sue. we are closely watching traffic sensors on traffic heading toward the richmond/san rafael bridge. speeds are moving well right now. there were some big backups yesterday and chp is warning drivers 45 miles per hour the new speed limit in the construction area. also there's no shoulder so one accident, one stall, is going to take a little longer to clear than we have seen in the past. also traveling along the peninsula northbound 101, there's some overnight roadwork. it was set to clear around 6:00 this morning but lanes are still blocked. kcbs mobile 1 drove past the scene and we are still seeing brake lights from sfo all the way towards the 380 interchange. southbound 101 looks okay right now through san bruno. and westbound 580 seeing some slowing as well coming out of the altamont pass past north flynn continuing towards about vasco. 29 minutes is that drive time. and we'll get a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza. they did activate the metering lights so that's why we're seei

elizabeth wenger is in the traffic center with tips for getting around the gridlock. >> i know. unfortunately, there really are no good tips. if this does go through, it's the last strike more than a decade ago is any indication, we are expecting gridlock. >> a bart strike is going to be quite disruptive to the bay area. the last strike we had was in 1997. bart carried 50% fewer people back then than it does today. so no matter how much contingency planning we do, we don't have 400,000 spare transit seats in the bay area lying around in the event that bart stops running. >> reporter: nothing can actually replace bart but there will be other mass transit options. muni will prioritize service along certain bus routes and rail lines during peak traffic hours. transbay service may be a no go. golden gate transit district warns don't expect extra ferry service if there's a bart strike. >> our ferries are running at capacity right now so we are not encouraging additional ridership at this time. our parking lot fills by 8:30 a.m. and we don't have additional capacity right now unfortun

it's hot out there and elizabeth wenger tells us the sun is not calming down. i went for a walk and it's hot. >> it's nice around san francisco but it's already heating up inland. there is a look over mount diablo. checking the numbers, we are already seeing 95 in livermore, 92 in concord but it is a little more pleasant in san francisco, currently standing at 72 degrees. so if can believe it, yeah, the sun is only going to continue to heat up the bay area. we have a heat advisory in effect for this weekend. for your east bay valleys north and south bays, afternoon highs are expected to be triple digits. so how far above average are we talking? quite a bit in fact. more than 10 degrees, more than 15 degrees in some places. so once again, you will want to take extra precaution. make sure you hydrate. so we'll check that seven-day forecast coming up, show you where you can beat the heat, as well. in the meantime, mobile weather and roberta gonzales are live in concord where kids are splashing around to keep cool. >> reporter: we are currently at 98 in concord, th

here is elizabeth wenger with more details. >>> good morning. we are waking up to cooler temperatures and a whole lot more clouds than we saw in the past couple of days. here is a look at the weather headlines for today. cooler, more clouds, and a chance of rain coming later today to evening, mainly in the north bay. and then a wet start to the workweek with a couple of wet mornings commutes, as well. a chance of rain in the north bay and then spreading further south. monday and tuesday will be different than today where we are cooler. we are only talking mid to upper 70s. shifting to satellite and radar, high pressure has been with us for the past few days. the high pressure is gone and we are seeing lower pressure and much cooler temperatures bringing rain showers heading our way and sticking around for the next several days before drying out by wednesday. here is a look at the future- cast. throughout the day things are still. and early afternoon to evening things get unsettled, mainly north of the golden gate. scattered showers spread around
