something elizabethtown gas says its technician never knew about. live, i'm brian thompson, news 4 new york. >>> we're also following a brush fire that's been burning through part of staten island for hours. >> crews just got control of this. michael? >> reporter: yeah, chuck, police and fire still on the scene in large numbers. the worry is this brush fire could spread to homes right here in the area not far away. we just got word that this fire is finally under control. and we want to show you some video and pictures sent to us by viewers here on the scene just a short time ago. fire that occurred in a brush area was the wind. the wind is pretty strong and kept this thing burning for about three hours. the fire started out as a four-alarm, quickly turned to a five-alarm. more than 170 firefighters were needed. again, though this happened in a brush area, it's not too far from homes here in oakwood beach. and so the concern was that this would spread. but again, those firefighters were able to get things under control just in the last half hour or

live in elizabethtown. brian thompson. >> this is what the site of the explosion looked like before the deadly blast. 1035 magnolia avenue. you can see how close the surrounding homes are to it and this is what it looks like. you see the whole left where 1035 magnolia once stood. michael, you're hearing first tonight. 11 families lost everything in an instant. their homes. they've been coming to this relief center. we sat down with some of the victims caught in the blast and they tell us they feel lucky to be alive. when we spoke with wayne shepherd in the e.r., he was shaken up. his eyes were still burning. he had a warning for others. >> anybody watching, if you smell gas, call the appropriate people. it may be nothing but it is better to final out it is nothing than to go through something like this. >> reporter: wayne smelled gas last night. he checked his house. didn't find anything. the smell went away. then this morning, this happened. >> just went to sleep and woke up in a nightmare. >> reporter: wa

another big issue has been raised about the gas company and it appears that elizabethtown gas company came to the building on monday for a turn on order. but when they got here, that gas line was already up and running. now several residents had complained about the odor of gas a day or two before the explosion. but there is no record, no record at this point, that anyone called the gas company to complain or report a possible leak. also the mayor confirmed that the -- confirmed that the building that blew had an apartment on the -- blew up had an apartment on the lower floor actually behind the garage and that apartment was an illegal conversion. >> it could have been an illegal connection as we all know gas rises. and in order for this roof to blow off the way it did, there was a very large concentration of gas in the roof area and the and it happened -- an explosion like this can happen with very little gas or lot of gas. however, the concentration in the roof area was probably substantial at the time of the explosion. >> reporter: and residents that lives in with buildings that ar
