elle. i understand he suffered very severe burns, very difficult moment right now. >> reporter: for everyone here, lots of hugs and tears here at san francisco general hospital. the fire department deals with the death of one and is waiting to hear about news of another firefighter that is here, still fighting for his life. earlier this afternoon, members of the fire department, the police department and city officials lined up to give lieutenant vincent perez a final salute. a very somber moment as the medical examiner took his body away. doctors say he died here at the hospital. he suffered severe burns, inhalation injuries and then went into cardiac arrest. fire chief said she started in the fire department with perez. it's a personal loss for the chief. the fire department's wrun onpresident says he was a popular, friendly man. >> i had the great fortune to work every day with vince perez for about ten years when i was learning to be a firefighter and i can say today that san francisco

jean elle reports from hayward. >> supposed to get lunch tomorrow. but there's still hope she's still out there. we just need help finding her and anyone who can help, please help. >> christine is desperate to hear from her cousin, michelle le. the nursing student was last seen friday night. she was in class doing clinical rotations at the kaiser permanente medical center. during a break around 7:00, she told a classmate she was going to get something from her car. she grabbed only her cell phone and keys and went to the north parking lot but she never returned. police found her white honda several blocks away saturday sgloerng and i love her. i even came to that parking lot just to get some sort of piece of her. if she's out there, she's safe, i pray to god every second that she's safe. >> reporter: investigators are now looking through security video, searching her car and reviewing her cell phone records while they follow up leads. phong le disappeared in april, 2010. she has the same last name, was also a nursing student and drove a white honda.

jean elle is live in san francisco. it's ironic this comes just days before the pride celebration right in the city. >> reporter: a judge decided last night that two men accused of attacking a transgender woman did not target her because of her sexuality, but the district attorney says their words prove otherwise and he plans to pursue felony charges. >> it does remind you of, you know, the vulnerability that we have as a community. >> reporter: claire farley is transgender. she remembers the sinking feeling she had when another transwoman was assaulted in april. it brought back memories. >> i was attacked and no one stopped to help me either. >> reporter: too much talked about the attack saying two men stole her phone and beat her up, calling her homophobic names, saying they hate men who dress like women. the assault was caught on camera but there's no audio. the judge decided they were motivated more by economics than hate. the district attorney's office says it's not enough. prosecutorers plan to pursue felony hate

jean elle joins us with details. >> reporter: police are still here collecting evidence and documents the scene. you can see the bmw pulled out of its parking space down there and the unmarked police car parked next to it in the street. all of those yellow markers indicate bullet casings. police fired quite a few shots at the suspect. the casings are all over the street. the fbi called them this morning about a stolen bmw linked to bank robberies in ervine. agents released pictures of the suspect last month. the fbi told the robbery abatement team this morning, the gps was telling them it was parked here. units sat here for six hours watching the car, and around 5:40 tonight, a man got into the car and started to pull out. a plain clothes unit moved in to make a stop but the driver tried to hit them with the car, so police fired. >> when the officers exited their plain clothes car, the suspect then aggressively moved for drove his vehicle at the officers. officers fearing for their own lives, discharged their firearms to stop the suspect. >> reporter: police say the suspect died at th

let's bring in nbc bay area's jean elle, who joins us from san francisco general with the very latest. jean, are you with us? >> reporter: raj, it's been a very emotional day here at san francisco general hospital. all throughout the day there have been lots of firefighters and police officers. the parking lot has cleared out for now, but some firefighters are still here dealing with the death of a colleague and now waiting to hear about another firefighter who is right now fighting for his life. now, just moments ago members of the san francisco fire department lined up and gave lieutenant vincent perez a final salute. a very somber moment as his colleagues watched his body being taken away. the 48-year-old died here at the hospital. doctors say he had severe burns, inhalation injuries, and then went into cardiac arrest. they say they worked on him for about 30 minutes before the 21-year veteran passed away. fire chief joanne hayes-white says she started in the fire department with perez and he will be missed. >> it's a huge loss. vince was a great guy. fun to work with. very capable
