jean elle is live with more on those party poopers. >> reporter: now that transportation officials have decided to open the span of the bay bridge in three weeks, there's not enough time to pull off a party for thousands of people. >> how many times in history do you get a chance to be a part of something. and say i walked across there. >> i was hoping to run across with my dad. have a little fun. >> reporter: this family was looking forward to setting foot on the new bay bridge. they aren't alone. thousands of people signed up to check out the new suspension tower before cars are allowed to cross the span. >> we had over 25,000 people sign up just for the walk. let alone the bike ride or the run. those were all private activities. >> reporter: bridge enthusiasts will have to wait. the bay area toll authority put the brakes on the party. a fix for broken bolts on the new span had the opening date up in the air. they decided to open the bridge september 3rd, and move forward with the fix while the span is open. that means the public labor day celebration is canceled. >> the clock ran out
