ellen zentner: no.conomic point of view, we felt like it was not necessarily sending the market a message. but it was coming to the realization that when you have a 5.5% unemployment rate and you have an estimate that is clearly wrong -- you would see accelerating wage pressures and we have not. for economists, the writing was on the wall that you need to lower the estimates of where you think full employment is. the market took it as, ok, the fed is not going to feel pressure from the labor market tightness for longer. they are telling us they have a longer runway. that is a markets have reacted. tom: have you ever seen a market and a fed so far apart? i am thunderstruck. ellen zentner: i have never experienced it possible policy tightening cycle where we are looking at dots. tom: do people stop you on the street and go, ellen, you are nuts? ellen zentner: ask my husband. he is the only one who stops me and says you are nuts. but that is a different issue. we have never dealt with dots before. they are

wanted to play for team ellen. venture capitalist was saying she wasn't in it for the firm she was in it for herself. she didn't get along well with people. gerri: we heard yesterday that the jury was able to ask questions, which is highly unusual of her directly, and asked scores and scores of questions directly and also we're hearing that they ask for individual answers to be read back to them. they wanted to review what she said. >> right, exactly. gerri: which is not surprising. >> not at all. and you counter that with what the firm said about her actions and the way she behaved in the office, and you really came up with no smoke gun for either side. gerri: the statement on her, which i find illuminating. she was given every opportunity to succeed ellen pao failed for one reason and one reason only, view from skill and performance were far different from what they were. sort of a damning thing. that's what you expect from the attorney. >> exactly what you would expect. as a defense strategy that's exactly what

can you talk about the lawsuit and what ellen pao alleged? brad: you would be surprised how much sympathy and support that has been. i think people identify the fact that she found herself a woman in a man's world, the fact that she alleges that there was this forms of subconscious bias that she had to deal with, not being invited to parties, being asked to sit on the periphery of meetings. whether or not you believe that she should have won her case people identified with this. the numbers of diversity in silicon valley are really bad. a lot of sympathy and some fear. that companies of the venture capital firms are going to be held accountable for their gender diversity workforce, the way they treat women and minorities. overall, a lot of interest and some sympathy and identification with alan. alix: not just in silicon valley, here as well. there is -- it is ethical to prove motivation, especially when it comes to sexual discrimination. >> yes, although i have to point out that the kleiner defense team did an amazing job. they have some bad

they did not feel that ellen pao was the right person to represent those. she was an employee who had issues getting along with people, and in a unfortunate turn of a phrase she didn't have the genetic makeup to begin the analysis of investment capital, and the pao team said that it was a moment of clairity, but te company said that it was simply shorthand for this woman was not cut out for this role. >> and clearly the jury did not see it from her eyes. i want to bring in dan from this point, because dan, over at "fortune" you have written about kleiner perkins, and you have reported before she filed the char charges that ellen pao would be fired from kleiner perkins, and now how is this going to be affecting the firm -- >> well, i reported that she would be leaving and not fired. but the reputation has been extraordinarily damaged in this, and candidly, it was surprising that they could not reach a settlement, and in the retrospect, it would have worked out better for both sides, ellen would have gotten some money, and kleiner would have not take zone muc

now back to our special coverage of the ellen pao trial. it could have a dramatic impact on silicon valley's culture. cory johnson is outside the courthouse in san francisco. cory: this is a case everyone in silicon valley is watching. it is a case that may affect businesses all over the country. the jury is deliberating now behind me in the courthouse. it's look at the case and talk about what was resented. i'm joined by two experts. you have been following this case and listening to what they have to say on the stand. what do you make of it? >> it is a tough case. usually when you have a case litigated like this, it is a tough case. the fact that there is so much at stake on either side --ellen pao is risking her reputation and her career. kleiner perkins is risking the trials and tribulations that come with the pr and obviously the money. the fact they are going to the mat and doing it on trial shows it is not a clear-cut situation. cory: what do you make of what has been presented thus far? which direction do you think the jury might be

ellen pao is suing kleiner perkins for gender discrimination.he claims the firm refused to promote her when she worked there because she is a woman. kleiner perkins contends powell did not have the right skills to move up the ladder. the case is happening at a time when the tech industry is facing more scrutiny for its lack of diversity. liz gaines, a reporter for recode, has been in the courtroom all week and joins us now. hi, liz. >> hi. >>. >> this seems like a tantalizing novelful sex point, and power. what are the revelation that's came out in court this week? >> yeah, we've just been waiting for the drugs and rock and roll to come out. no, the biggest revelation was for people who have been following the case was a new witness, and that was trey vasolo, a former kleiner perkins partner who testified she was also harassed by a former partner as well named ajit nasre who is the same person that ellen pao says pressured her into having an affair. and another thing that's really been at issue and i think will continue to be an issue in this mo

ellen pao is in the house. crowd of onlookers in the house as well in a case that really has had silicon valley transfixed. pao got here just a short time ago. we can look at video of her from an earlier court appearance. she is a woman of many accomplishments, three ivy league degrees, joined kleiner perkins the preeminent silicon valley firm as a junior partner but complains she was not allowed to advance or progress the way her male colleagues were and this case, which has been going on for the better part of the last month or so, is likely to go to the jury today and this jury of six men, six women, has multiple questions to consider. did kleiner perkins discriminate against ellen pao, keep her out of meetings and gatherings and getaways and retaliate against her when she ended a consensual affair with a senior partner and filed this lawsuit in 2012. was the discrimination at the firm allowed to continue, not just against ellen pao but allegedly against other female associates and junior partners. what abou

. >>> it was standing room only today during closing arguments in the ellen pao trial. this is the gender discrimination case involving legendary venture capital firm kleiner perkins. pao says she was held back because she's a woman. nbc bay area's mark matthews is in san francisco this evening. mark, we're coming to an end here. what stood out today? >> reporter: well, raj, you know, court began at 9:30 today, but by 9:00 every seat was taken in that courtroom. ellen pao's complaints really boiled down to three points -- one, that she was discriminated against because of her sex, because of her gender that she was not promoted. two, that she was retaliated against, that she was fired from the firm when she complained about the sexual discrimination. and three, kleiner perkins did nothing to prevent the discrimination. ellen pao's attorney, alan exelrod exelrod, began by telling the jury kleiner perkins ran the firm like a boys' club, that men were judged by one standard women by another. he pointed to a 2006 performance review by the managing partner stating "ellen has

that was great for ellen pao. cory: the stage was set for, this is a place where sexual harassment happens? katie: inability to deal with having women in the workplace who wanted to be just as aggressive and successful as the man. the last two witnesses are today. each one has found a way to portray pao as someone who is difficult to get along with. the question becomes, despite the fact this place may not have been great for all its female partners, would ellen pao not succeed because they discriminated against her, or because she was difficult to get along with, and is murphy said did not take advice and did not know how to get along with her colleagues? cory: they are not mutually exclusive. she could have been a crummy venture capitalist and was harassed or discriminated against because she was a woman or beyond. katie: exactly. this'll be a difficult case for the jury to decide. closing arguments should start tuesday or wednesday, hopefully tuesday. then they will deliberate trade could take a while. they hav

a victory and a defeat for former employee ellen powell. >> the jury deliver add sweeping rejection ofowell's claims of sex discrimination. scott budman has reaction to the verdict but we begin with mark mathews covering the trial since the beginning. he's live in san francisco with more mark? >> reporter: in 40 years of reporting i've never seen anything quite like this. the jury announced they had a verdict. called everybody back to the court at 2:00 this afternoon. everybody lined up. the jury verdict came in, but then as the jurors were polled the judge realized that actually they didn't have the nine votes required on one of the claims that ellen powell was making. he had to send the jury back in to deb liberations for another 25 30 minutes before they finally came back out and delivered a sweeping victory to perkins and a big defeat to ellen powell in her discrimination claim. right after the verdict was delivered, ellen powell left the courtroom and she was followed shortly by the lead attorney for perkins. we'll hear from both of

they wanted readback from a 60-day performance plan they put ellen pao on.y also wanted readback from a senior partner who testified here. and he said something very important for the jury that pao didn't have the right, quote, genetic makeup to be a venture capitalist and asked for readback from john door, the head of kleiner perkins. just about 15 minutes ago, we received word they're going to read the verdict that this jury has been deliberating for 2 1/2 days. it's made up of 6 men and 6 women, kind of a cross-section of artists, there's an artist on the jury, a prison nurse, a b.a.r.t. station manager, a female mid-level executive. so it's a cross-section of san francisco, if you will, and they have reached a verdict. they have to come up with -- they have to find four specific counts. two counts of discrimination, and two counts of retaliation by kleiner perkins against ms. pao. that i have to show in the seven page jury verdict form that kleiner perkins discriminated against pao based on her gender and have to show that cleiner perkines oo or agree on

ellen powell took the stand. powell claims she was fired from the legendary venture capital film after she claimed to be sexually harassed by a partner. she admitted to having an affair with that partner. mark joins us from san francisco. mark? >> reporter: the past couple of weeks we've been hearing from other witnesses saying that ellen powell was a quiet woman that could not hold a room. today she spoke up a nearly packed courtroom listening to every turn in her story. the ivy league educated ellen powell with a law degree mba from harvard and electrical engineering degree from princeton, talked about the loosey-goosey way cliner perkins handled her reports of sexual harassment. on the stand, powell testified that a senior partner gave her a book of erotic poetry for valentine's day, then invited her out to dinner while mentioning his wife would be out of town. that story paled in comparison as by what powell said was the relentless pursuit of a co-work he that had an affair an affair that ended after she lear

the cross examination between the attorney and ellen has been hostile. they played video from her deposition to contradict statements she made in front of the jury. there were a number of e-mails that discountinged her account of events likes this one she sent eight months after the affair. you know i would do anything to preserve our friendship even though sometimes it's harder than other times. a second focus of the cross examination today was workplace conflicts. >> they are trying to establish a real pattern of ellen having problems with people that she worked with. >> reporter: liz gain, senior editor, has covered the case since powell filed suit in may of 2012. >> ellen powell, her personality is really at stake in this case because her former co-workers are aringguing that she was really hard to work with and that's why she was fired. she's arguing that she didn't get the opportunities that she deserved because she's a woman. >> reporter: they also dug into claims that her partner gave her an inappropriate book of poetry and dinner invitation. he

it was one of the situations where if you look at what happened ellen's lawyer smiled, ellen smiled. everyone sort of went, aah, now it comes out. they are trying to establish that he was she say she saywas retaliated for suing. that they might not have wanted her there but suing was the final straw, and they started building a case against her. it was a very, very interesting twist. there was a telling back and forth exchange with a friend who worked at google, who walked her through, this is how you collect e-mails and ims, some sort of legal action. clearly she was thinking about about this quite a few months prior to filing suit. they portrayed ellen as a person who in a very calculated manner was gathering evidence and created a case. do you think that had enough of an effect to undo all the time that -- she started the case saying she was a litigious person first and also a crummy venture venture venture capitalist. was it convincing to say she was just as litigious, thereby throwing out that argument? >> i can't say what the jury would think for me. >> it's hard for me to beli

and why is the ellen powell case so signify?>> it's so signify was gender discrimination has always been illegal, but this is a moment when it's no longer accessible. >> but is there something particular in silicon valley that has people paying so much attention to it? >> of course. these companies are so important. if you look at some of the biggest ipos in the last ten years, technology is eating the world. so we care a lot about what happens in silicon valley. and we're seeing that they're absolutely a boy's club. the boy's club in silicon real is even worse in bc. we have seen the number of female partners go from 10% in $1.990 dismal 6% in 2015. >> what about the fact that 90% of the venture capitalists are men? because they will say there are not too many qualified women out there, and the trouble of lawsuits. >> there's definitely the argument being made by big companies that there aren't enough women. and they call it the pipeline problem, and i just don't think that's the case. there are plenty of qualified women out th
