now to my conversation with ellen pao. lost her historic gender discrimination case, should begin interim ceo of reddit were to make all the controversial moves to crack down on -- eight months and she was forced to resign. i asked her what happened. ellen: a lot of change had to happen. he came in a couple of years before i did and try to transform the company. it was a small startup with mostly white men, started by two white men. the culture was very strong of exclusion. he brought in different people. all the women kept getting pushed out. in 2013 up joining and worked with him to make change together. this is a group that did not want mobile. very conservative, very locked into the product as it was. we were trying to bring it into reach more people, have more conversations. i think the change was really hard on the community. it was heart of the employees. it took a lot of effort to get to where we got at the end of that. emily: you made an effort to cut down on hate. you banned several of the most hateful subreddits

ellen pao became a kind of cause celebre after she filed a lawsuit against her employer, the powerful venture capital firm, kleiner perkins in 2012. she was a junior partner and former interim c.e.o. of reddit. pao filed a gender discrimination suit saying her bosses did not promote her because of her sex and retaliated against her for complaining. she asked for 16 million in damages in a trial. but she lost and her personal reputation was damaged along the way. still, her case served as a wake-up call. she has a new book about it and the aftermath titled, "reset." our economics correspondent, paul solman, sat down with her, part of his weekly series, "making sense. >> reporter: ellen pao, welcome. >> thank you for having me. >> from your biography, you do not seem like the person who would sue kleiner perkins or for that matter pretty much anyone. >> it's not my nature. i think the lawsuit was part of a mission to call attention to this problem. so i had tried so many other ways before hand. i'm not doing that much press, i'm an intro vert, it's hard for me. but now it's going to go
