he said duke ellington performed there when he was a young man. i said duke ellington is a pretty well-known person but this building, i found some stuff in there that relates it to a very important time in our history, to a very important person, and he turned at white as he could. i thought he was going to pass out. get rid of it. don't go to gsa with it. get rid of it. so i took it upon myself to -- to do what i did. i went to the library of congress for about nine months, every evening, and i did research. what threw me off was the address. everything i found here was addressed 488 1/2 seventh street. then i realized, well, i need some help me, so i went to somebody who knew about washington and asked him questions. you've got to go to the library and get the old records and look at them so i did. it had clara barton lived here. that's how this got lost in 1870 they changed this address to 437 because the numbers never matched up, and they change it had to 437, and then i was sure. i called people all over the country. i set up a post office b

duke ellington, marvin gaye launched careers, it was not immune to the trouble that gripped our city through the years. the howard fell in disrepair, remained closed for 30 years. tonight, after a two-year renovation, the curtain goes up once again at a special gala. riots of 1968 did incalculable damage. one of the areas was shaw. shaw is now on the mend. bustling neighborhoods, construction everywhere. and one of the new anchors of the development is right here at 7th and t, the howard theater. >> a cultural institute, a destination, it will be the other book end to 14th and u. we also see traffic coming from downtown d.c. and convention center just a few blocks up north on 7th street, to here, this has the ability to be a nexus to bring the city and connect the city again. >> clip and lalique ellis worked six years and invested blood, sweat and tears. >> i knew i had a major project i had to try to get off the ground. our first go at a major project like this. no one wanted to touch the howard theater with a ten foot pole. we had to get smart. >> and so after 29 million dollars an
