next up, to think about duke ellington.o satch and to dizzy, duke ellington was something of a different kind of ambassador. i mean, he was the elder statesman of this bunch. he was born in 1899. he's basically an old man when he's doing a lot of these tours. and he'd kind of had these middle-class airs about him. he had been raised in a little bit better scenario in the united states than some of his other black counterparts on these tours. so the state department considered him this model ambassador. yet even he despite this kind of distinction, he was the only registered -- or one of the only registered republicans among all of these musicians. he was a very -- of a very different stamp from these musicians but even he saw the connection of his jazz as an american art form with african roots. even he saw that. and he saw that connection with the people as he traveled in africa as well. and so he, as kind of that old guard, saw the united states and their mission in the world and this mission to spread american democracy

the inspiration for this in the performing arts center was duke ellington. it's actually replicated around the school. this is affectionately known as the egg. come inside. this is an 800 space theater, that has more than 148 speakers, 28 microphones, and is the home of the duke ellington school of the performing arts. pretty spectacular. not only is the school about performance arts, but it's also about visual arts. here's one of the sculpting classrooms. one of the only performing arts schools that will have a kiln. this is the prop studio. the equipment that you see around the room is primarily for the design, and creation of theatrical props. let's go to the orchestra room. this orchestra room allows the students here at duke ellington school of performing arts to play with not only students that are in california, but could be in tokyo, could be in germany, through their live streaming system. >> before you were kind of converting a regular high school, trying to have state of the arts facilities in a regular high school, it doesn't really work. if you

first i want to go to casey seeing it is life in ellington field in houston where two nasa planes took off earlier to capture the high def video of the thing. >> the people of houston have been waiting for this for some time. it's about a million degrees here about 200% humidity. any shade from the sun is certainly welcome. they're only getting 66% totality here. we're about the height of that coverage. these nasa planes are incredible. we watched them take off earlier from this point at 11:15 eastern time. they were playing flying at 400 miles an hour at 50,000 feet zipping over to kansas missouri. they were going to follow the path of the eclipse throughout missouri and kentucky, some of the areas experiencing totality. the cool part about it is because they are so high, well above the first layer of the atmosphere nasa scientists tell us it's extremely clear, no weather or dust in the air. that allows them to get some of the best images that have ever been captured of an event like this. because of course technology has ee involved a whole lot since the last time we had one of these
