i want to bring in a man who knew elliot rodger and said he had concerns about him. knew rodger through two of his school friends and joins me now. thank you so much for joining us here on cnn. how did you get to know elliot rodger? >> thank you for having me, don. i met elliot rodger from a group of my former students once they became adults i stayed in touch with them and he was -- he was not one of my students himself, though. >> what was your first impression of him, mr. shaw? >> my first impression of him is that he was very shy and awkward, also intelligent, though. he was stand-offish. he would not really talk to you unless you talked to him. >> did you think he could be dangerous at any point when you met him? >> not when i first met him. but -- and no one can conceive of anything like this happening. but about three years ago i did mention to the mutual friends, if i ever met someone who fit the bill of a mass murderer, it was elliot rodger so it was surreal when it was confirmed that it was elliot rodger. >> not to put you on the spot, why didn't you do any

this came a month ago after deputies visited the apartment of elliot rodger. rodger wrote in a manifesto "that would have ended everything. for a few horrible seconds i thought it was all over." rodger had guns in his apartment but police bought his story and left. more on that in a moment, but first, investigators late this afternoon served a search warrant at the homes of rodger's parents. they have an enormous amount of evidence so far including that manifesto and 12 crime scenes. seven people died friday night, more than a dozen were hurt. we begin with danielle nottingham in santa barbara. >> reporter: elliot rodger's rampage through a small town packed with college kids started in his apartment where santa barbara county sheriff bill brown said he stabbed three people to death. >> in his manifesto he actually did make mention of stabbing while they were sleeping. >> reporter: according to sheriff, rodger sent his 140 page manifesto to some of his college professors one of whom alerted police. authorities say it came too late to stop what he vowed would ha

said that any moment now we'll learn the identities of the three people stabbed to death inside elliot rodger'srtment. we'll bring you that information as soon as we get it. fredricka, we've been speaking to a close friend of the rodger family by the name of simon estare and he walked us through in great detail what elliot rodger's family went through before and during that shooting rampage. he says that on thursday elliot apparently spoke to his father and said that he was looking forward to seeing his family this weekend. and then friday night, at 9:17 p.m., pacific time, the mother received this e-mail with the manifesto attached to this -- 140 pages attached and she was one of a couple of dozen people that elliot rodger had sent this manifesto to. she instinctively went to his youtube page after reading the first page and that's where she came across the retribution video where he talks about slaughtering women at the sorority house. the mother called 911 and alerted the father about what was going on and they were on their way to santa barbara when they found out about the shooting and lea
