[applause] thank you for your service. liot carlson is a longtime , a graduate of the university of oregon and and the university, author of a book published in 2011 which explores the life and career of the officer carlson described as the most consequential shore-based actor. he also tells us code breaking at intelligence gathering pearl harbor was actually the work of many individuals, and to discuss the effort of these individuals who change the course of history, please welcome elliot carlson. we will find out from elliott carlson that question was being asked by a lot of people. let me summarize three things i think are important to the battle of midway that come out of all of this. one, japanese naval expansion does not just occur between pearl harbor mid-atlantic way. it's really the culmination of 50 years, as we've seen of japanese expansion and military build-up, half a century in which they have not been defeated. coral sea, we can put down as a draw. as they go to midway, there's this great feeling of supreme court and they have not known defeat. feeling of superiority and they have not known defeat. this pre-activity is king's policy of two ocean war. if king hadn't pushed on the joint chiefs, a strategy to hold the line in the pacific, the defensive containment line may well have been east ofri and not west of it in terms of midway island. the third thing in terms of the evolution of the aircraft carrier as a weapon, nimitz really succeeds in this idea of marshaling carriers, putting them together as an offensive strikeforce and the pre-pearl harbor
