tom: elon musk certainly does have access to cutting-edge technology, no one is disputing that, but theres argument on the point of the extensional threat. i wrote about musk's remarks to the governors. when i spoke to other people who work on a.i., and spent more time on it than elon, there was a sense of disappointment because this idea that, you know, some point in the future, super intelligent machines will perhaps harm humanity, that is such a long way from where we are today. you know, today we have systems that can do one thing, you know, it is not generalized intelligence that can take on multiple tasks. and so, it is quite hard to actually have a proper debate about that because it's just so far in the future, it's very speculative. and if so, i spoke to researchers who not only work on a.i., but think about the impact on society and they saw elon musk's remarks as kind of missed opportunity. he had a few minutes in front of the most powerful leaders in the u.s. to talk about the technology, which is going to potentially transform every aspect of our lives and he chose to direct
