elton simpson grew up here in phoenix and we seen yearbook photos of him and by all indications looks like he had a fairly typical american upbringing. he was the captain of his high school basketball team. he was quite a good athlete. somehow he decided to convert to islam in high school. that's where the details then become a little scant. we know that he did attend the mosque here just a short distance from where i am for the last ten years or so but again the mosque says he didn't show outward signs of radicalism. as far as the other gunmen nadir soofi he spent his formative years in pakistan. we do know from a source who is familiar with the family background that his family divorced his parents divorced and he moved back to the united states with his american mother and he grew up. people here who know him say he owned a pizza shop. he had a son. we understand that son is quite young. about 8 to 10 years old. and that he also didn't show any outward displays of radicalism. his grandmother, wolf did talk to a cnn affiliate kprc in texas and she says that she does not believe her

it turns out elton simpson first saw the f.b.i.'6 when an informant started secretly recording their conversations within a lot of them. simpson's family issued a statement saying we are sure people in this country want to know if we had any idea about elton's plans and we can assure you we did not. like every one we are struggling to understand how this could happen. i know you have not yet been briefed. what can you add to this story? >> it shows what a threat isis is to our homeland. we need to put this in perspective. the fact they claimed responsibility. whether they were inspired by isis or had direct comun cakes with isis. we had six arrested in minnesota. you had the man fromio who did travel to syria and came back to the united states and was planning attacks on our country. we had the army recruiter who was going to join isis along with a member of the guard. this is all in april alone. this is a threat to us, and making sure we address -- we'll have social media on isis's use of social media. bill: do we need our own fede

good morning. >> the fbi first investigated elton simpson about nine years ago.t's when the field office in phoenix began a criminal investigation because of his association with a person the bureau believed was setting up a terror cell in arizona. there are recorded conversations between simpson and an informant during which the two frequently discussed waging a holy war and the importance of going overseas to wage jihad. court documents recount a conversation in may of 2009 in which simpson is quoted as saying it's time to go to somalia, brother, we got to make it to the battlefield. it is time to roll. in early 2010 fbi agents stopped simpson from traveling to south africa where he was allegedly going to study islam. but investigators believe his goal was to go to south africa and then on to somalia. that's something that simpson denied. but a year later he was found guilty of making materially false statements to the fbi and sentenced to three years probation and a $500 fine. law enforcement officials say they continued to be aware of simpson and followed his

>> i actually went through a range of the tweets from elton simpson. i think it is a challenge, though because if you look at his past tweets at simpson's past tweets one of the perpetrators he's talking about these kinds of attacks both in the west and elsewhere. what's difficult is to respond quickly once he really starts to get violent. i mean he starts talking about the charlie hebdo attack in paris. i think from an intelligence standpoint what is difficult is to move that quickly and to arrest him when it's not entirely clear he's going to do it. just calling for this kind of attack doesn't necessarily mean that you can go and arrest him. i think that's actually the challenge. and we have a lot of people on social media that are saying these kinds of things erin. >> phil this is a point you've made before. there are a lot of people on social media. right? so they can't -- you say, okay, there were these tweets out there. how could they have not stopped these guys? a point you make on this show give me them i'll give you 10,000 others. how are they

they are elton simpson and his roommate, nadir sufi. simpson had been on the radar of feds since 2011 when he lied about planning to travel to somalia to wage violent jihad. alina, what have investigators been learning about the two men's ties to terrorist organizations? >> well jim, federal investigators are still trying to determine if these two men were simply inspired by isis or if they were directed to act by the terror group. here in texas, you can see the shooting scene remains cordoned off. the car the two men were driving is still here. they're getting ready to tow it. and it's a reminder of a violent attack that was stopped thanks in large part to a quick thinking officer. >> there is no doubt that it saved lives. >> reporter: high praise tonight for the traffic cop turned hero who authorities say used his handgun to stop two gunmen wearing body armor and armed with assault weapons. >> he did what he was trained to do. and under the fire that he was put under, he did a very good job. >> reporter: police say the men drove up to
