he's the ems director for the town of west and joins us now. also with us, jill jenkins, a triage nurse who rushed to the scene. thank you for being with us. first, how are you doing? >> i'm doing all right. exhausted but doing all right. >> you got injured in the blast. you were a quarter to half mile away and still got injured. >> yes. >> from what? >> i was in the nursing home evacuating the station closest to the fire, because i was afraid of hazardous materials and smoke, and luckily we had gotten everybody on the other side of the building when massive explosion t ro. the roof fell in on me, glass. i thank god i'm alive just looking at it. >> it's a volunteer fire department here, a volunteer ems. if you had been on the scene where firefighters were -- >> i probably would have been dead. i normally go to the scenes but i saw the toxic smoke and i knew i needed to get to the nursing home. >> firefighters and ems responded about half an hour or so before the actual explosion when there was a fire, and then wisely decided we got to evacuate

make 'em hurt you, but don't give 'em anything for nothing. then we would make sure we shared that. well, and we shared the stuff that we created. people we talked language through the walls. i speak enough words and enough languages to get in trouble in six or seven bars in different languages, i suspect, but not much more. and, actually, a hot more. we were very serious about learning languages through the walls. people were building houses, other people were composing things in their mind or passing things that they knew. but in my case with all these words, i just wanted to have a legacy for myrna in case i didn't make it. so i tapped it through the walls. it's a heavy knewing section called strapping on a tailpipe, and then there's a section which is the dark and birth stuff, the p.o.w. stuff, and then there's the holidays, christmas things. if you'd tap something through that would be particularly poignant, the guys would say thank you very much, we're arranging the suicide pact on our side now, you know, kind of thing. and then you'd have, and a long, epic poem going for 50 o

. ~ we found ourselves in the ems division in a bit of a holding pattern during this time, unsure of what the future held for the system. we saw our market share of transports go from about 90% down to 70% and the private increased to that amount. and again, that's one of our main -- one of two ways the department earns revenue. so, fiscally as well as operationally, it was difficult for us. so, we were very delighted that in january of last year the state sort of very -- we worked really hard with the department of emergency management folk, city attorney's office, local 798 to get those exclusivity rights back which was huge for the city. but what it means is that the department must go back to at least the 80% share of the market for transports to be in that exclusive operating area and that language. so, we find ourselves in a position now we're at about 70% and we need to get up to at least 80%. that would take some time. it's going to require some investments including equipment, apparatus, and personnel. so, we're working again closely with the mayor's budget office with our d
