joining me now are congressman emanuel cleaver, democrat of missouri, and richard wolffe executive editor of msnbc.com. thank you both for being here. >> thanks, reverend. >> good to be here, reverend. >> congressman, have we now turned a corner on health care? >> i think we have. we're headed in the right direction. we have problems at first. you know, republicans saw a glitch or a calamity in every glitch. you know, i've got a 1-year-old granddaughter, and even on thanksgiving day she had a number of little glitches. but we're not ready to throw her away because of a glitch here and there. most things in the beginning stages are going to be difficult to pull off. one of the things that's really sad, and i hope the american public is seeing this. when republicans are asked what is your replacement, what are you going to propose? we'll see is not a plan. it's not a bill. you can't file we'll see. you need a bill. it has to have content to it. and that's not going to happen. it's one of these deals where they just criticize and criticize and criticize. and that's it. and that is the plan.

joining me now are congressman emanuel cleaver, democrat of missouri, and msnbc.com executive editor richard wolffe. thank you both for being here. >> thanks, reverend. >> good to be here, reverend. >> congressman, that group called darrell issa's hearing a wichi witch hunt. what do you make of the hearings? >> you heard about all the hearings that have been held that really produced nothing. in spite of all of the charges, nobody's been indicted or been held in contempt of congress for perjury. and so here's the problem. you can go around the country. you can frighten people. most people are trying to live their lives particularly during this holiday season. and so they're not going to go out and read two or three sources to gather information. they're going to listen to the things being said by a member of congress that is frightening. they have no idea that while we had a bumpy start, the affordable care act now is moving and moving rather smoothly. and maybe that's what the theory is. >> i think that is what the problem is here, richard. is that his target is health care. he's ju

joining me now is democratic congressman emanuel cleaver from missouri and e.j. dionne from "the washington post." thank you both for coming on the show. >> good to be with you, rev. >> how do you explain this mean spiritedness from the gop? >> what i think is going on is there is this pervasive belief that somehow people who are in need are leeches, that they are not out looking for work. they would rather get an unemployment benefit than a payroll check. which is absolutely ridiculous. and in my own district, there are going to be almost 20,000 people who will lose their emergency unemployment compensation by the end of this month. >> in your district alone -- >> in my district alone over 20,000. and you multiply that all around the country and it comes up to about 3 million people. and, look. these are hard-working people. the things many people forget about is that these individuals are out looking for jobs every day. that's a requirement to receive the unemployment compensation. many of those jobs have disappeared as a result of the economic collapse we had
