next several months if you get to be chairman of the reform committee, subpoenaing people like rahm emanuel, asking them about a possible deal involving a job offer. are you going to spend your time doing that? >> as i said, when governor rendell said this is typical, it goes on, a member of the press team said similar things happened under the bush administration. what we discovered is that laws on the books to prevent this ree teenly are not considered to apply. as part of reform, it's not a matter of looking back.

rahm emanuel leaving? what do you make of it? >> oh, i think it's highly likely, anderson. he's talking to some of his close friends. i have to disclose, i'm one of them, i'm a dear friend of rahm. when rahm leaves, and i think he's pretty certain to and likely to run for mayor, the president is going to lose his right arm. you know, the guy without rahm, i don't think we'd have health care and 30 million americans would have health care because of rahm. i don't think we would have had the wall street reforms which will be tough new rules up there on wall street. i don't think we would have had the stimulus package, now pretty unpopular with a lot of americans, but it saved millions of jobs and probably kept us from going into a great depression. the president is an able guy and will find someone to serve him but rahm has been the indispensable man. >> was he a good chief of staff or a failure? >> a good chief of staff and a moderating influence on the obama administration, known as a pragmatist and level-headed guy and after all, why wouldn't you go be mayor of chicago rath

not really a big public figure, but he's expected to be sort of the interim chief of staff when rahm emanueluse rahm emanuel is really up against some big deadlines here. he's got november 22nd where you've got to get the signatures to basically get on the ballot. then you've got a february 22nd primary. there are a lot of other democrats looking at this race. and so while, you know, here in washington there's this expectation that rahm emanuel is this giant political figure and maybe this is going to be a slam dunk, this is going to be difficult. and i remember a few weeks back when all of this -- when mayor daley first announced he was going to retire, i think it was the president himself in an interview with abc suggested, look, we'll deal with all of this after the midterm elections. people inside the white house, including the president, were really caught off guard by how rapidly this is going to happen, because if rahm emanuel is going to get serious about this, he's got to get going. >> ed, now you're talking about rouse as a short-term plan. >> reporter: yeah. >> is it clear that th

what does it mean for this president to lose rahm emanuel right now? ot of people who are hoping the door hits rahm emanuel on the way out. what's surprising, some of those people are liberals now disappointed with this administration. what it means, a lot of politics, controversy around rahm emanuel. what it means for the president, it's part of the changing of the guard inside the white house. his economic team has largely left. his national security adviser will probably leave right after the election. he faces a big choice. he's have an interim chief of staff then face a choice after the elections. do you pick somebody else from within who's been with you all the way back from the 2008 campaign or do you go outside and pick somebody, maybe somebody with better relationships with republicans? we don't know how many seats the republicans are going to win in november. we do know they will win more seats. do you try to go inside or outside? that's the big debate in washington. most expect the president will pick somebody from within his inner circle, th
