it is like bringing back the embarcadero freeway. it has that kind of impact. also, they have begun planning beginning with the demolition of the produce market. here is the first version of the golden gate way, and you can see that there are no large buildings -- everything -- all the buildings are related to each other in placement of each other. there is nothing sort of stock in. they build back words and up. they do not come forward and build of -- they do not come forward and build up. after that, a student won an award doing this version, which is kind of an oscar niemeyer round building. so it seems to have sort of been influenced in the second version of what golden gate was supposed to look like. again, you see all the open space. one last thing i wanted to quote is when the embarcadero buildings with in in 1967, portman said in his presentation today that all the office structures would be so designed and located on the side that a clear east/west deal is retained at the bay and around the very building appeared further, it is felt the lines of sight

to create the embarcadero, they had all of this exposed rock. they decided to mine telegraph hill for the rock and build a levee and bill in behind the levee. they blasted the rock. it was illegal but they did it anyway. they took the rock and built a rock dike all along here. beneath the fill the latem are of this mud with the consistency of jello. that layer may be as thick as 110 feet. >> is bad dyke founded on the mud -- is the dike founded on the mud? >> it is. when they dumped the rock into the bay mud, it was like dumping rock into jello. it went down into the mud so that they could build off of that. it then took the angle of repose. it is stable. san francisco came and built piers on piles over the top into the water. >> the piers are built up over the water. >> refusal is when you cannot advance the pile anymore. this is under the bay mud over there. they meet refusal. they gain support and bearing on top. saltwater attacks concrete. in the old days, they did not understand the effects of salt water, chloride on concrete and steel. a l

because sometimes if we make a decision -- say a train is leaving in embarcadero, if we make the decision to switch the train back, we can let people know at embarcadero, so they know that either they are going to be asked to get on it the following train at balboa or 19th avenue, wherever. so that is one thing. the second thing is that we had -- and this has allowed us to monitor and report to you on a monthly basis, the fact that the biggest complaint about switchbacks was that it put me off my train and i had to wait 10 minutes for another train, and that does not seem right. what we have done since then is that, and we're able to track this with something called the line management center, which is a new real time management technology that we have, for the first time, the ability to see where every train is. so when we make the switch back of a train to adjusted, we're able to see where the second train is. we will not offload a train if there is not a train no more than five minutes apart. the third leg of the stool in this is to have the control center talk to the operator and have

there you can see barely the bay bridge as we look at the embarcadero.are blowing there. that is the wind coming in ahead of a cold front. it's a little bit warmer this morning than the last couple of mornings. but it put that extra amount of moisture and why the drizzle is thicker this morning. speaking of those temperatures. 60 in mountain view, san jose and los gatos. everybody else in the upper 50s monterey bay inland, clouds and drizzle, temperatures 57-28 degrees. pockets of sunshine will develop as cold front moves from northwest to southeast but i will bri in a cool breeze that will keep our temperatures below average. once it moves on, clouds and drizzle return tonight and keep afternoons cooler than average for the weekend. for today, looks like yesterday as we compare our highs. 8 degrees cooler in san francisco. san jose 13, redwood city, 16 and livermore, biggest discrepancy, suppose to be 89 and it will be 70, 19 degrees cooler than normal. that is most of the valleys will be. we'll have low to mid-60s through most of the east bay shores. 6

. >> here we are at the embarcadero. we are standing at one of locations for the street artists. can you tell me about this particular location, the program? >> this location is very significant. this was the very first and only location granted by the board of supervisors for the street artist when the program began in 1972. how does a person become a street artist? there are two major tenants. you must make the work yourself and you must sell the work yourself. a street artist, the license, then submitting the work to a committee of artists. this committee actually watches them make the work in front of them so that we can verify that it is all their own work. >> what happened during the holiday to make this an exciting location? >> this would be a magic time of year. you would probably see this place is jammed with street artists. as the no, there is a lottery held at 6 in the morning. that is how sought after the spaces are. you might get as many as 150 street artists to show up for 50 spaces. >> what other areas can a licensed street artist go to? >> they can go to the fishe
