southbound 101 at embarcadero road.s where we have the two left lanes closed due to that serious crash that we had overnight, the dump truck with the bed lifted, most likely the driver had no idea that was up, hit that overpass and they are waiting for that structural engineer to arrive and tell them that all is safe. there's a 27-foot crack in that overpass, though, so obviously they have to wait until they get the go-ahead. we've got about a two-mile backup on the southbound side a little bit of a backup on the northbound side and i should say that off ramp from northbound 101 to embarcadero road is closed since that overpass is closed. taking you over to san jose here. southbound 101 just before tully road, getting reports of a new rollover crash. it sounds like that's blocking the left lane so that's the southbound side. we do have our typical delay there on the northbound side and as mike has been mentioning this morning, really pretty sunrise shot. the traffic not so pretty here through the bay bridge toll plaza.

the northbound off-ramp also closed here at embarcadero on highway 101. back to you guys. >>> happening today, friends and family will lay deputy michael foley to rest. foley had worked at the alameda county sheriff's department. he was in enforcement for 37 years. he died last week after being hit by an inmate bus at the santa rita jail in dublin. investigators say the entire thing was just a tragic accident. a memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. at the concord pavilion. after that, there will be a private procession and burial. hundreds of officers from across the state are expected to attend. >>> the man arrested for taking part in a shootout on the streets of san leandro has been charged. marcus jones now facing several felonies for the weapons and drugs found in his apartment when he was arrested. but he hasn't yet been charged for the shootout itself. jones is accused of shooting from his car at another car in the afternoon gunfight back in november. an elderly couple was seriously injured. they are recovered. >>> tiffany li and two others w

embarcadero a high of 58 is expected for today. and in the north bay point reyes high of 57, novato 62, napa area expecting a high of about 65. let's go ahead and talk about this time line, though. today will be a dry end to the workweek. go outside and enjoy the dry conditions because overnight into saturday morning you're going to start noticing some deep cloud cover. and then in the north bay they are expecting to see the rain first as early as about 4:00 a.m. if we fast forward through the breakfast hour at 8:30, they are going to start seeing periods of moderate heavy downpours as well. another thing expected to i can p up is also the wind. especially along the mountain areas. we could see some gusting up to 45 plus miles per hour as well. so, that's definitely going to be something to look out for. if we fast forward through 8:00 around dinner time, 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00, this pushes south, san jose, campbell will be seeing moderate downpours as well. if you had plans to be outside in the evening hours, don't get caught off gua

southbound 101 at embarcadero road, this is a dump truck.hit the overpass and caused major damage to the truck of course and also a chunk of the overpass is falling now so this could cause a lot of problems in the future here. so crews are on scene closing down the two left lanes and also the northbound 101 off- ramp. we have just started seeing some slowdowns in the area. as you can see traffic moving at about 50 miles per hour. and also there's about a mile backup out there so if you want to avoid this road just in case the backup gets worse consider southbound 280 or southbound el camino real, but there are traffic lights there and might slow you down. to the south bay that's the peninsula, to the south bay commute, green all the way through. so you're looking good on 101, 280 and 87. moving over now to the altamont pass, slow traffic. 19 miles per hour once you hit north flynn road. so that's slow. you want to give yourself extra time to get through that. time to get through the metering lights at the bay bridge toll plaza. the maze to d

this is southbound highway 101 at embarcadero in palo alto. they were taking a closer look at serious damage caused by this -- yes, this. it is exactly what it looks like. a dump struck with the bed still up hit the overpass just before 11:00 last night. >> there is a 27 foot crack in the overcrossing from the collision. we just want to make sure that it is safe to -- for people to drive on and under. >> the driver went to the hospital with minor injuries. the dump truck was towed along with the bed that was torn off. but a mess and a big job was left behind. two southbound 101 lanes were closed. one lane on top of the overpass on embarcadero was also closed. caltrans sent a structural engineer from sacramento arriving around 10:00 a.m. to give a final look. now that some of the debris has been cleared, thein tegitiest -- the integrity is being evaluated and commuters are slow with what is next still up in the air. i asked why it took so long for the structural engineer from the caltrans headquarters in sacramento to arrive here in palo alto.

this is southbound 101 at embarcadero road and may not look like too much right now, but we had a huge mess overnight. a dump truck with the bed raised hit that overpass at full speed, clearly that driver was not aware that they had the bed up and it clipped it. you can see that damage to the overpass right now. so here's a look at caltrans workers. they've cleaned up most of the mess so obviously we've got the truck remove there had and they're waiting for the structural engineer to come all the way from sacramento to check that out so this is going to be a long-term situation. right now, though, as you can see, those two right lanes are open. i want to talk about a major b.a.r.t. delay here. trains stuck at hayward station so the problem starting at fremont in that richmond direction and this is due to a switching problem so if you can get a little bit closer to san leandro, you'll still be able to move in the richmond direction but anything south of hayward, you're not moving right now. so hopefully i'll have an update in a few. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. sounds l

south of there and embarcadero road, there is damage to the freeway. what happened there, i'll hand it to bob. this is a crazy situation, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, mike. as a result of this accident, the number one and two lanes on southbound 101 are shut down just before you get to the he embarcadero overpass. there is a slight divot, a chunk of cop across the street knocked out of the overpass. chp is waiting for a caltrans engineer to arrive from sacramento inspect the entire area of the overpass to make sure it is safe so the lanes reopen. the estimated time not until noon. a dump truck had its bed raised. he dumped his load. he he forgot to lower the bed. it came detached from the cab and trailer. it had to be removed. and he he popped a wheelie in the process and broke his nose. chp does not believe drugs and alcohol was involved. as a result, they do have to make sure the integrity of the of the overpass is okay. one lane on the northernmost side is shut down into they are able to come and inspect that overpass. number one and two l

caltrans workers spent the day chipping away at the concrete embarcadero road overpass in palo alto. the driver of this donald trump truck decree -- dump truck created the mess, only to get back on highway 101 with his truck bed still raised. he then drove straight into the overpass around 11:00 last night. >> and it seriously damaged that overpass to the point we had to close the two lanes beneath because the damaged section is a little over 45 feet long. >> reporter: caltrans opened up one of the two lane closures this afternoon but the number one lane will remain closed until 7:00 tonight and then later closed again for repairs to a steel girder that needs to be replaced along with the surrounding concrete. >> we want to make sure we don't have any more loose concrete that could fall and damage a car and injure somebody. >> reporter: the driver of the dump truck went to the hospital with minor injuries. his truck and bed or towed away. sing as hired to work by a private contractor. the chp says their investigation into the crash is ongoing. in the meantime, caltrans says it's uncl

san francisco, 54, along the embarcadero, 57 for the marina. up here for the north bay, 60 in mill valley. maybe you have a three-day weekend coming your way you're heading up to napa, it will be 65 degrees. let's take you to the weekend rain chance. storm system will drop down from the north. a colder storm, also lacking a lot less moisture than our flooding january and february storm. so, here's the deal. saturday morning nothing in terms of heavy rainfall. but some scattered activity mainly for the north bay at 8:30. as we head into 2:30 in the afternoon on saturday, mainly the north bay for accumulation. so, i think you're good down in the south bay. and most of the east bay for any plans at least for the first part of saturday. then bif the evening hours we get more consistent rainfall dropping down to san jose at 9:00 p.m. and i think the evening on saturday into sunday morning, that's going to be our zone to pickup our accumulations. rainfall totals, a lot of this mass you'll see is in the green shaded color. that's good for a quarter of

we just got word seconds ago that they have reopened the on ramp at embarcadero. that's at 101 in palo alto. back to you. >> mike, thank you. >>> flames erupt at a duplex overnight in san jose. the fire broke out on south 11th street just after midnight causing quite a panic for sleeping neighbors. >> kris sanchez is live at the scene. kris, the fire was so hot that nearby homes had to be evacuated? >> reporter: yes. and most people were probably asleep because it was after midnight. crews are boarding up the windows here so folks can have some privacy in their homes. this is the home right now and you can see the black smoke and the plywood going up as well. the neighbors in the home evacuated as a precaution. they watched for 30 minutes as firefighters tried to get the fire knocked down. when it was over, three people here could not go home. both units of the duplex were burned and damaged. firefighters were on the scene after making sure there were no hot spots that would flare-up. to give you an idea of where this is, this is happy hollow to the southeast. the

. >> let's get back to kate larson near 101 at embarcadero. >> good morning, natasha and reggie. yes, it was a rough morning in palo alto on 101. fortunately, the northbound lanes are open now. they were closed for many hours overnight because of some very large potholes. let's take a look. caltrans crews came out here last night. 9 9:00, the chp got a dozen reports of popped tires on the freeway because of potholes throughout the northbound lanes near embarcadero near palo alto. these were no ordinary potholes. they were very large. >> we noticed that there are four or more large potholes, ranging anywhere from four to six feet in length. two to three feet in width. six to eight inches in depth. >> of course, it is no secret that the 101 down on the peninsula can be rough in terms of these potholes and rough patches on the road. we also saw crews in redwood city this morning doing some patch jobs on the freeway. hopefully, these roads will get taken care of. of course, the rain, all the moisture that we've had this winter, can really be rough on all the asphalt and pavement. we'

that is when the truck hit the embarcadero overpass on highway -101 in palo alto.st night this all started just before 11 pm on thursday evening when the driver of a big rig truck was traveling southbound on 101 you have the dump trailer in the up position and hit the overpass now the driver of the truck receive minor injuries he was taken to the hospital when the truck was remove caltrans cruise discovered that there was a 25 foot crack in the overpass they have been examining it ever since they close down to southbound lanes of 101 and one lane of the overpass. now earlier today they discover the damage was worse than first believed it was actually 45 to 50 feet of the overpass is damage. at this point one lane of southbound 101 remains close that lane up on the embarcadero is going to be shut in definitely and what they're doing is putting a tarp of the damage to keep concrete from falling into the roadway at this point they're hoping to reopen the section of roadway 101 by 7 pm this evening also at this point to california highway patrol has not said why the dr

and as he approached embarcadero over crossing, the dump truck collided with the over crossing. it created a 27-foot crack. >> the top of the dump truck was jammed into the over pass. this lifted it off of the wheels forcing it to come off of its hydraulics. the impact caused the driver to hit his head on the steering wheel. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the two lanes are closed as cal trans does the inspection. i did call to find out what they're doing, if they're just inspecting the integrity or if they have to do repairs. unfortunately i haven't gotten answers on that yet. traffic is sluggish out here because of the two lanes closed. we did get confirmation from chp that it looks like the lanes will be open around 3:00 this afternoon. >> so it's going to be an issue for drivers in the area. thank you very much. >>> we are following breaking news out of the south bay where san jose fire crews are responding to reports of a gas line rupture. this is happening at sun crest avenue and peery lane in san jose. the san jose fire department tells us residents call

the latest is that black tarp that was installed by caltrans over the embarcadero road overcrossing.ight now, one southbound lane remains blocked. all the lanes were supposed to be open by 3 p.m. today to ease the evening commute. but that didn't happen. now, over the last couple of hours, caltrans cleared away all the loose debris from the cracked section and then installed that plastic tarp just to be sure that if anything may become loose it doesn't fall on the cars below. caltrans engineer has been inspecting the bridge but it took hours for that engineer to arrive from sacramento adding to the delays. for 101 drivers, it's been a day of long traffic jams. >> earlier today we had to shut down two lanes. as it progressed, when we got an engineer out here, we were able to open up one more lane. and as of right now, it's looking like we'll have one lane closed until we get further notification from caltrans. >> reporter: all this got started about 11:00 last night. that's when a dump truck from a nearby construction site drove down the freeway with a dumping bed still in the upright
