emerald, it's pretty scary to hear about an inmate escape. any idea how often this happens? yeah, although we might see an occasional escape, those types of breaches are often isolated. i looked up some numbers from the florida department of corrections and report from shows that from 2014 to 2015, there were 73 escapes from correctional institutions statewide...with most happening while an inmate was on work release. this man---joseph flanagin---was not on work release, but was working at the county's fleet maintenance building when he stole a white pickup truck similar to this one and took off. it's kind of like what happened just a month ago in bartow. in that case, an inmate used a makeshift weapon to kidnap a correc officer. that inmate then escaped in a truck before leading officials on a manhunt that ended in pinellas county. the department of corrections says it has zero tolerance for escapes... so that means flanagin will likely extend his stay behind bars... he was already nearly a quarter way through his sentence...which was not even a year long. flanagin was in j

been protests daily. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live in the satellite center, emerald, some of the most violent protests we've seen have been in portland, oregon. and we're learning many of the people who were arrested there didn't even vote. yes...that is true. many of the people responsible for channeling their anger over the election into violence didn't even bother to head to the polls. our partners at kgw in portland got the names and ages of all 112 people who were arrested. and from there, they compared those names to state voter . what they learned was interesting... at least 70 of those arrested didn't vote. it's ironic...but there is a bigger picture to keep in mind. one...there were more than 4- thousand protesters who filled the streets in portland. so those 112 arrests represent less than two percent of the people who came out... which brings me to point number two, which is as americans, we have the constitutional right to a peaceful protest...which is what most demonstrators were a part of. many of them denounced the a lot of you all are talking about this on our

emerald, what do we know about this criminal they're looking for? sheriff's officials are looking for a 45- year-old man by the name of joseph flanagin...who has been on the run in our streets for more than 12 hours. take a good look at his mugshot. flanagin was behind bars for theft and violating probation. officials say he was working fleet stole a pick-up truck and escaped. the crazy thing about this story is something similar happened about a month ago in bartow when an inmate on work detail stole a truck and kidnapped a corrections officer. officials say the suspect locked the other inmates in a small building and used a sharp object to force the officer into a work truck before taking off. he was eventually caught in pinellas county. but as for this current case, officials are still trying to track the suspect down. so if you kn man's whereabouts, of course, you need to call police right away. inmate escapes are always alarming because you never know what could happen while these criminals are roaming free. and coming up at 5:30, we'll take a

-protests against the business mogul have been taking place all over the country. 10news reporter emerald morrs live at the federal courthouse in downtown tampa where a protest is planned tonight. emerald, between these protests and what we're seeing on social media, we're getting a sense of the anger out there. yeah, hundreds of comments flooding our facebook page...mostly from people who say these protesters need to accept president-elect donald trump, and move forward. but one protester we spoke to summed it up the frustration pretty well by saying. 'okay, we'll accept him as president, but we're not going to stand for the racism and sexism he spewed throughout his and that's what has pushed thousands of people in cities all over the country into the streets. protesters in chicago and new york demonstrated into the night outside of trump's developments in those cities. so far, the protests have been peaceful...but they have been forceful... in los angeles, demonstrators took to the streets, blocking traffic for hours. the nation, this is the message they want to send. but during a spee

emerald, these thieves are distracting elderly shoppers and stealing their wallets. but police say family members can help p loved ones from becoming targets. yeah, it all has to do with awareness. police say a lot of times, the elderly might not always be aware of the latest scams and crime trends, so it's up to family members to make sure they're vigilant about keeping their loved ones aware of the things happening that could put them in danger....like the latest crime spree targeting shoppers at publix stores about one thing you see that could be tempting for thieves. if you pointed out that purse, you're absolutely right. here's what's been happening. this group of thieves, made up of two women and a man, come into the store and find an elderly person to talk to. and because people see this as a friendly, safe area, most don't see the harm in a casual conversation. but while that conversation is going on, another person in the group swipes your wallet right from your purse while the third person watches out for other people. and on top of at criminals have alread

emerald, most of the protests across the nation were peaceful, but at least one turned violent. yeah, lucky for us, we didn't have any problems as people marched here along 7th street in ybor. tampa police say the most they had to deal with was routing traffic detours and guarding the entrance ramps to i-275... but other parts smoky haze took over the streets in portland, oregon where the demonstrations escalated to a riot. police had to make several arrests and in some cases use some force to get people out of the streets. and in oakland, fires burned and windows were broken out... it's an extreme symbol of the rage, anger and confusion many people are feeling right now. protesters say they can't understand how a candidate who ran a campaign on offending blacks, hispanics, mexicans, the disabled, those who serve and many more---made it to the highest office in the land. you all wasted no time on our facebook page coming after the protesters...saying they've got to accept the electoral college's decision... president-elect donald trump either... on twitter last night, he called

emerald, the post shows deputies pulling a handcuffed suspect by his dreadlocks to take the picture they posted. right...it wasn't an official mugshot, so some people are asking what was the purpose behind the photo...and wonder was it solely for the purpose of embarrassment. we'll let you decide for yourself. here's a screenshot of the post along with the picture. pasco county officials have already taken the photo down...but not before a lot of you had the chance to weigh in. here's the thing...the man has been charged for some pretty serious crimes. officials say during an attempted traffic stop, he ran a deputy off the road, and was later caught with lots of drugs, including marijuana, mdma and meth. but the problem some of you have is with how the sheriff's office decided to share the story on social media. we blurred out the man's face because of the controversy and because this isn't an official mugshot. joann arthur said: this is humiliating. probably guilty of everything he's accused of, but come on. hopefully this public humiliation will be what he needs to turn his life around

emerald, the school bus driver is now facing some serious charges. yes, at least five counts...including vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving. here's a look at how terrible this crash was. police in the area have called this crash 'every public safety official's worst nightmare.' right now, police say it's very likely that speed was a factor in this crash that caused the school bus to flip on its side and wrap around a tree. the crash was so bad, on top of stealing lives, it apparently took about two hours to get all of the kids off the bus. cbs news is reporting that officials have issued a warrant for the bus' black box and to look major school bus accident in the area in less than a week, and it has some of you on our facebook page asking about how safe your kids are when you put them on the bus. we'll look into at 5-thirty. back to you. president-elect donald trump is outlining his plans for the first 100 days of his administration the video was posted to the president-elect's transition page on youtube. in the video, do

emerald, those people are pretty excited, but nationwide, this has been a tough election for many voters to get behind. yeah, you wouldn't be able to tell from the energy that i've seen here at 4/5 o'clock in the morning. some people have been out here for hours, and the line continues to grow. but we've all seen the course of this election cycle....and polarizing for our nation. in fact, a new poll from cbs news and the new york times shows 82 percent of voters...82 percent...are more disgusted than excited about what could happen tomorrow. and the frustration is on both sides of the political aisle. 60 minutes did a focus group that included democrats, republicans and independents...and when asked what words they would use to describe the political process in this election cycle, this is what they came up with...listen to this... rigged, disgusted..and the list goes on. it's a terrible mindset with polls opening in just one day... they're frustrated with both candidates...they see clinton as dishonest, trump as hateful and divisive... and confidence in both candidates is very low. and

emerald, this is going to be great for tourism and our local economy here in tampa bay. yeah, all of the business in and out of the port already brings in billions each year... and having another cruise ship that carries thousands of passengers will bring a lot of money into the area and boost tourism here in tampa. starting january in 2018...carnival cruise line will operate the new ship...called the carnival miracle. it'll carry more than 2100 passengers on a 7- day excursion to the cayman islands, mexico, honduras and belize. on top of that, it will also make a special trip to the panama canal in april 2018. great tourist vacation destinations...but it also means more business for the port and for the tampa bay area as a whole. you have the potential of having tens of thousands of travelers flying into tampa bay over the course of a year...that brings in money...and sometimes those visitors stay in town a few days to explore before or after heading out on their trip...boosting our tourism profile even more. when we put this story out there on our facebook page, it got
