emerald morrow is at big cat rescue in tampa. the question some have, emerald, is why aren't these animals being released into the wild? >> reporter: the first reason is these animals have been in captivity their entire lives. it would be impossible for them to survive on their own in the tigers in north america. so the sanctuary officials say it is one of the safest options for them now. the three tigers are back in their trailer. there are two more that have already been taken inside. so right now they are waiting until it gets a little more light outside so they can take the rest of the tigers in. one of the important things to understand about this sanctuary is why it does the work that it does. many of the big cats that it takes in are ones that have been abandoned by people abused in some form or another. in this case, that facility in colorado agreed to give up 100 big cats and bears, and this sanctuary here is one of several across the country that have stepped in to save these animals. again because they would not survive

he was working in fleet maintenance at the time. 10news reporter emerald morrow is tracking the search from the newsroom. emerald, it's pretty scary to hear about an inmate escape. any idea how often this happens? yeah, although we might see an occasional escape, those types of breaches are often isolated. i looked up some numbers from the florida department of corrections and report from shows that from 2014 to 2015, there were 73 escapes from correctional institutions statewide...with most happening while an inmate was on work release. this man---joseph flanagin---was not on work release, but was working at the county's fleet maintenance building when he stole a white pickup truck similar to this one and took off. it's kind of like what happened just a month ago in bartow. in that case, an inmate used a makeshift weapon to kidnap a correc officer. that inmate then escaped in a truck before leading officials on a manhunt that ended in pinellas county. the department of corrections says it has zero tolerance for escapes... so that means flanagin will likely extend his stay behind bars.

one student is taking action to make sure no one at his college goes hungry. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live in the newsroom. emerald, a young man out of alabama is stepping up to feed his classmates in need. yes, this is such an inspiring story. here you have a student who is already juggling a lot himself---trying to get an education, working a job---but somehow he found a way to start an on- campus food pantry for classmates who are running low on funds to keep this is 20-year- old justin franks. he goes to alabama a&m, and says he was inspired to start this on-campus food bank after finding out some students at his school were skipping meals or going to bed hungry because there just wasn't enough money to go around. and even though he didn't have much himself, he took 40 dollars, a little bit of faith and started up the foster complex food pantry. and the response was overwhelming. he started out with a few packages of ramen, so household items. and when he posted about it on facebook, the project took on new life. the story got shared hundreds of times and donations just started

been protests daily. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live in the satellite center, emerald, some of the most violent protests we've seen have been in portland, oregon. and we're learning many of the people who were arrested there didn't even vote. yes...that is true. many of the people responsible for channeling their anger over the election into violence didn't even bother to head to the polls. our partners at kgw in portland got the names and ages of all 112 people who were arrested. and from there, they compared those names to state voter . what they learned was interesting... at least 70 of those arrested didn't vote. it's ironic...but there is a bigger picture to keep in mind. one...there were more than 4- thousand protesters who filled the streets in portland. so those 112 arrests represent less than two percent of the people who came out... which brings me to point number two, which is as americans, we have the constitutional right to a peaceful protest...which is what most demonstrators were a part of. many of them denounced the a lot of you all are talking about this on our

deputies in polk county are looking for an escaped inmate, and they need your help. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live in the newsroom. emerald, what do we know about this criminal they're looking for? sheriff's officials are looking for a 45- year-old man by the name of joseph flanagin...who has been on the run in our streets for more than 12 hours. take a good look at his mugshot. flanagin was behind bars for theft and violating probation. officials say he was working fleet stole a pick-up truck and escaped. the crazy thing about this story is something similar happened about a month ago in bartow when an inmate on work detail stole a truck and kidnapped a corrections officer. officials say the suspect locked the other inmates in a small building and used a sharp object to force the officer into a work truck before taking off. he was eventually caught in pinellas county. but as for this current case, officials are still trying to track the suspect down. so if you kn man's whereabouts, of course, you need to call police right away. inmate escapes are always alarming because you never know wha

grocery store, we want to warn you about thieves who have been targeting shoppers. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live at the publix in plant city. emerald, this is especially concerning for elderly shoppers. yeah, it's a little unsettling to think that you can't come to the grocery over the last few weeks...criminals have been targeting shoppers at the publix stores in plant city...by stealing their wallets right out of the cart. here's a look at the culprits police say have been preying on innocent shoppers. officials say between october 28th and november 13th, these two women and this man would come into the store and casually strike up a conversation with someone they felt would be an easy target. once they had the shopper distracted...just like that, one of the thieves would steal the victim's wallet right out of the cart. it's very important advice to keep in mind to let your guard down. but you've got to look out for your safety at all times...especially this time of year around the holidays when there might be more crooks out looking to take advantage of you. police here in plant city

listening to your concerns about a facebook post from calling inappropriate. 10news reporter emerald morrow is in the newsroom this morning. emerald, the post shows deputies pulling a handcuffed suspect by his dreadlocks to take the picture they posted. right...it wasn't an official mugshot, so some people are asking what was the purpose behind the photo...and wonder was it solely for the purpose of embarrassment. we'll let you decide for yourself. here's a screenshot of the post along with the picture. pasco county officials have already taken the photo down...but not before a lot of you had the chance to weigh in. here's the thing...the man has been charged for some pretty serious crimes. officials say during an attempted traffic stop, he ran a deputy off the road, and was later caught with lots of drugs, including marijuana, mdma and meth. but the problem some of you have is with how the sheriff's office decided to share the story on social media. we blurred out the man's face because of the controversy and because this isn't an official mugshot. joann arthur said: this is humiliating. p
