i want to say on a personal note that it is dedicated to my three wonderful grandchildren, emerson, piper, and coal. i am delighted that my cousin bill and his family is here to celebrate with us as well. i would like to dedicate this talk to julie and tricia and adam david, who deserve to see their parents treated fairly. and i think that sandy has told me how the theme for this coming year is taking a new look at richard nixon. that is a great context and the need to tell you about this book. because by telling the story of him through the humanizing perspective of his wife and his marriage, his strings are clarified and his weaknesses are put into perspective. and in 1948 when richard nixon was a member of the house un-american activities committee and he was investigating him for communism, he never dreamed that 24 years later he would be in china and have a curiosity and openness and follow what is emerging rather than keeping to a rigid path what changes you can make. and i have a confession to make you all along that line today. in 1969 was a graduate student at university of texas
