how did tim cook describe apple's business in the face of the pandemic? emily: the headline here was that he talked about a very depressed march. they are already seeing in the second part of april a pick back up in terms of sales. he told me that the last part of march and the first part of april were very depressed, and then we have seen a pick up relative to that period of time second half of april. they are not projecting what they are going to do this quarter, because he says the lack of visibility they've got, and this is the first time in a long time that apple has not given a forecast, so i know some analysts were disappointed in that. but the headline is that iphone sales were not down nearly as badly as some thought, down about 6.7%.

emily: let's talk a little bit about the supply chain. i always try to get some insight from cookn future products. that is the one thing they never give. but, i did ask whether some of these issues would impact the coming pipeline. we are expecting potentially four new phones to be unveiled later this year. impact -- the pandemic impacting product in 2020, perhaps 2021 or 2022? he said we couldn't be more proud of our current lineup and excited as ever about the pipeline. he highlighted the three products they have been able to push out over the past two weeks. also said we rapidly built the muscle to run the company in this kind of way, indicating that he didn't seem to see any significant issues in the supply chain and they continue -- can continue to produce and release new products and he is really confident about their ability to continue to do that. to your point about store, the beck question is when will apple reopen stores? apple seems to be an indicator that other retailers might follow. he said by the first half of may, somewhere in that ballpark, think the initial sto

emily landon. i meant to ask about the cook county jail. chicago's jail is now the top u.s. hotspot as the virus spreads behind bars. what is being done about it? guest: i am not on the inside of what is being happening, but i can only imagine what it is like . i have seen the numbers and talked to people involved, and it is a tragedy. it is just not the ability to keep people separated. it is different than a nursing home outbreak, like we saw some homes in washington, incidentally being propagated and we are having that same experience in nursing homes across america. they are doing an amazing job trying to control this virus and keep it out of these nursing homes, but it is such an incredibly high risk population. my heart goes out to all of our loved ones in these places, and it is hard because you cannot visit them and this sort of thing, but those rules are really important. many of them are doing a heroic job trying to protect their patients, but the same thing is true inside the jails. people are living close together. i am not a public policy guru and, i am a health

emily: so you have facebook and google that are probably going to be suffering from some kind of ad slump. you got tim cookple will bounce back just like they did in the 1990's. you've got amazon struggling with warehouse issues and getting people the things they need. i'm curious if you see any bright spot. where do you see hiring happen? even companies that have been doing well like zoom video, blue apron -- you are seeing some of these companies pull back as we talk about reopening the economy and folks think maybe folks will not be using those as much now. jana: i think this a lot of different areas where there is some interesting and maybe even slightly unexpected growth. i will give you a couple of examples, one of which is gaming. you are finding that a lot of people are engaging with gaming companies in deeper, broader, more frequent ways they had in the past. you have even seen certain gaming companies starting to morph their model. there is a gaming company down in l.a. called wave. throwingll around virtual concerts. they are moving into a home arena which is very exciting. this whole concept th
