she's the ambassador to the united arab emirates, an experienced diplomat. she has not been in the job on the uae for very long. it's very clear that it's good we have somebody highly qualified as a diplomat in that position right now. ambassador leaf has had a difficult first month on the job. ambassador leaf was confronted last week by the foreign minister of the united arab emirates, what they described as a blunt exchange. the reason for that blunt exchange, why the foreign minister from uae let our brand-new ambassador to his country have it, it's the issue of search and rescue. specifically, search and rescue of coalition military pilots who might fall into enemy hands, who might fall into isis' hands if they crash while conducting air strikes over syria in the war against isis. that foreign minister told our ambassador last week that in his country's view, u.s. central command, the u.s. military is not doing enough, putting enough assets in place in the region to allow for the capability we would need to go in and rescue a pilot who for whatever reaso

the united arab emirates is sending a squadron of jet fighters to join jordanian f-16s. dozens of fighter jets have bombed isis training centers and weapons storage sites this week after the group released a video showing a captured jordanian pilot being burned to death. meanwhile, the family of an american woman held hostage by isis is still holding on to hope that she is alive. on friday isis leaders claimed that 26-year-old kayla mueller was killed in a jordanian air strike in syria, but u.s. officials say there's no evidence to authenticate that report. isis took mueller hostage in august of 2013 as she was leaving a hospital where she was working as an aid worker. mueller is the only known u.s. hostage who is still being held as isis. >>> federal prosecutors have charged a group of bosnian immigrants living in the u.s. with aiding isis. one of the six people appeared until federal court in chicago yesterday. the group is accused of sending money and military equipment to rebel groups in syria. federal prosecutors say the suspects communicated through social media. >

our correspondent, becky anderson is joining us now from the united arab emirates in abu dhabi. you had a chance to speak with a top jordanian spokesman. what was his message? >> reporter: yeah according to the government's spokesman who met king abdullah within the past couple of hours, jordan will intensify its efforts with the international coalition fighting isis. so how far that will manifest itself that is still being negotiated. between the king and the army and indeed the coalition, not least with washington. do have a list of what he said is unlikely to happen next. >> at this point, our policy we have said that boots on the ground will be the iraqi military the syrian moderate forces to fight terrorism, the peshmerga in the kurdish area. so this is the type of boots on the ground that we talked about and the coalition talked about, not talking about boots on the ground. >> reporter: wolf the message from jordan and other arab members of the coalition is this -- if isis is to be stopped, jordan and others want an increase in air strikes. that means washington committing

cnn has learned that the united arab emirates suspended its air strikes for now at least.ring in pentagon correspondent barbara starr. you have been looking at this. what more are you hearing about this move by the uae because it appears to be a reaction to the jordanian pilot being taken hostage. >> by all accounts uae is expressing its concern that if one of its pilots went down that that pilot could not be rescued. there would be little chance of that pilot being rescued. search and rescue aircraft are just too far away for that to happen. i can tell that you what u.s. officials are telling me is when the jordanian pilot went down he went down in a populated area. rescue assets were quickly launched. acres aircraft helicopters. he was picked up within minutes by isis fighters. it's a fact that there is tremendous risk in these air operations to pilots either from being shot down or going down due to mechanical trouble which is what did happen to the jordanian pilot when his plane went down. they do everything they can to get to them in time but it can be very tough. >>

tonight's blaze is the fourth large fire in a residential tower in the emirates since 2012. after the last one, one expert warned publicly that about 70% of the very high-rise buildings in dubai are wrapped in construction material that is considered to be highly combustible. we don't know yet whether that estimate includes this specific building, the torch tower. but dubai is a city of super, super tall buildings. and even among dubai's many super tall skyscrapers, this one that caught fire tonight, it stands out. the torch is the fourth-tallest building in dubai that is designed for people to live in. but again, the news tonight is that a very large fire broke out in the skyscraper in dubai in the united ash emirates, broke out overnight. apparently somewhere around the 50th floor. we are told residents were evacuated safely. at this point we have no reports of injuries. but we're joineded right now by john chorus. he lives across the street from the torch. he was evacuated tonight once it caught fire. thanks so much for joining us. it is very late at night there so thanks

yes, you're absolutely right, in the last 24 hours, confirmation from united arab emirates since they stopped and suspended flight operations in december they have now deployed a squadron of f-16 fighter jets to jordan who resumed fighting carrying out air strikes. jordanian government is sending troops, thousands of troops to the border to beef up some of that border security and perhaps concern there may be some retaliation or attempt by isis to infiltrate jordan to carry out would be attacks. i think as you mention president assad is watching this unfold and saying we are ready to be a partner, trying to use the situation as it unfolds to try to show that he is the only way forward to end isis that if the international community rallied behind him, they could try to take the fight to isis. this is a point he has been trying to make to his advantage, which is isis poses a threat but so many of these countries now fighting isis had for a long time supported isis or these type of groups and were behind this terrorism that has ravaged syria. >> ayman, thank you very much. richard engel
