and i would just like to say emmett's story, emmett was not trying to do civil rights. these people weren't trying to integrate or do what should be done and they got no recognition and emmett was not the first person to be killed by a long shot but he still speaks and ms. parks told the story that she thought about emmett till. i don't know what you are saying but i'm open. you say you are going to help us. and i applaud you because we need to do something and it can only be done by us. professor can you help us? >> i think within the school system itself my curriculum as a u.s. history teacher at the 11th grade level is civil rights so it's my responsibility to teach the standards to my students and it would be a total travesty to not teach that history especially emmett's history given an event that changed the nation. it gradually turned into triumph and there is a national effort to stifle the teaching of civil rights content. there is a lot of controversy over the so-called critical race theory. i just view it as telling the truth as to what happened and as educat

another witness was willie reed who said on the morning after emmett till was abducted, he saw emmett in front of a barn managed at the time by milam's brother and heard the screams of a young boy he presumed was emmett till. when they found the body, did you put two and two together 5and think what you heard going on, that was emmett till? >> i'm sure. i was sure then. >> reporter: fearing for his life after testifying against milam and bryant, willie reed was smuggled out of mississippi. he went to chicago where he suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized. you are a good man. a lot of courage for an 18-year-old. a lot of people would have walked away. wouldn't have said a word. >> i couldn't have walked away from that like that, because emmett was 14. probably never been to mississippi in his life. come to visit his grandfather. they killed him. that's not right. >> reporter: it took the jury just an hour and seven minutes to return a verdict of not guilty. one juror said it wouldn't have taken that long, but they stopped to take a soda pop break to make it look good. milam

a majd emmett was from chicago, he traveled to mississippi. was from curtis stone, and she had come to tehran just for a short visit with family. she was totally innocent as emmett was and for reasons that are a tylee irrational she was stopped and taken away and then brought up in a van and turned up dead a few days later. so i think it is the degree of her innocence and the fact that she could be anyone, she could be any woman. justice emma tilde could've been any black kid. she has become such a national figure. and i think that that is what most people will come out to the jets. >> and now, there's so many of these other young women risking their lives and protesting. something like 241 people have already been killed in the protests. and so many women have been injured. how long can this go on? what is going to happen there? >> well, this is an interesting question because, usually, what this happened, or at least 43 years ago when the first revolution in iran took place in 1978 and 1979, the next phase of sort of people coming out to the

till, the brutalizing, , the lynching of emmett till in mississippi was something that changed theirives and is like a scar that just could not be erased. it informed that they need to be part of the struggle going forward no matter what. i found in talking to a lot of these young people that trayvon martin was really the emmett till of this generation and that was very moving and surprising to me that every single person i spoke to practically said the name trayvon martin moore than they said the name colin kaepernick when speaking that what informed the protest. it really made me think about the fact that trayvon martin was killed nine years ago. if your tweet that means that happened while you were 11. if your 11 year old enough to get what's happening but also young enough to ask the question why does world the world e this way? that really i think stuck with people in a big way. the other civil rights movement parallel that comes to mind is when you think of something like the montgomery bus boycott, this was an issue about respect and about jim crow on the bus lines. that's wha
