he's also for all things emmett till related my true north. you may have heard reverent parker tell till story on abc last month, if you did you heard him talk about the fun loving, bicycle riding boy that was the young till. you also heard him talk about the sheer terror of being in the unlit sharecroppers cabin in the dark hours of the mississippi night, when two of till's killers, went through the house bed to bed pausing to interrogate parker until finding tell in the next room. it's important to start with reverend parker because most of us, especially me, only notable as an icon the. boy whose lynching inspired a generation and launched a move mid. we know him as a story that puts most parks into action, as a tortured body on the pages of jet magazine, or as a turning point in the life of john lewis. we know, as his mother maybe till has said, that he didn't die in vain. but if the reverend parker were here tonight, he remind us that for all we know about till since 1955, we've lost the joyful obscurity of those first 14 years. and so, in

kansas city is an emmett till town. i can explain that if you're interested and so like every time a big till thing comes out, there's a big event in downtown kansas city and some years ago when devery anderson's book came out. he came to kansas city and he did a big talk with alvin sykes at the downtown. branch of the public library in kansas city a venue. perhaps not quite this big but almost it was it was packed. at the end of the lecture an elderly white gentleman stood up and said, how come i never heard the stories? i was i was growing up in the 60s 70s and 80s and no one was talking about it. a party on the stage never even got to respond because before they could begin to answer the question that elderly african-american gentleman stood up and said i've been living with this story my entire life it was drilled into me when i was five years old and i got reminders on an annual basis. right, and so one of the things i learned from that experience. is that sometimes when it seems like till story is gone underground

event because so much of my professional and personal perspective has been shaped by the legacy of emmett till and the courage of his mother. when i was director of the national museum of history and culture, every morning i began my day by visiting the till exhibition and the strength that i gathered there from missus till's memory only get through even the hardest days. it was thanks to her that her son's murder reunited the civil rights movement in the 20th century. in the midst of her own personal devastation, she chose to keep his casket hope and achieve one of the world to see what they did to her son. she refused to let america go look away. i first met her in chicago, and the opportunity to spend a fair amount of time there just trying despite the death in 2003, she spoke to me about how she carried the burden of emma's death and the meaning of this loss for nearly 50 years. she wondered who would carry her burden when she was gone. and i took that as a direct charge to name the to make sure that emmett till and countless other victims of violence, would not be forgotten. and this is w

[applause] one thing in reading these books and dabbling into them what i saw was both men. or leslie burl mclemore and -- had been during respect for medgar evers. he had a willingness to work with anyone whot is dedicated o bringing justice and progress for state and david senior you say he talked about how he -- it pained him to be away from them for a couple of hours. and showed what possibilities of what a father's love could look like and talked more. talk more about this man in the movement. >> hello 1 everybody. it's so good to be here and to see your faces. metzger was one of the first people i met when i came from mississippi in april of 1962. med care was older than us and what he demonstrated what the movement is about and family. at that particular time we as a people operated as a family. this whole idea of extended family. so people of the civil rights movement when we got

johnson the very brave publisher who put the picture of emmett till into ebony and jet magazine, and of course trm howard the great black hospitaler who protected the family of emmett till during their trial and was a mentor to medgar evers and fannie lou hamer so that's just a wonderful reflection on what black americans were able to accomplish despite all of the ridiculous obstacles that were being put in their way. then as we move on we take a look at some of the really egregious. the egregious eugenicist views of the progressive era where right at the turn of the century, you know, it's sometimes underestimated. just how popular these eugenicist ideas were the notion of racial superiority and inferiority on a pseudoscientific basis. and from there we see the rise of the minimum wage the idea of the minimum wage and the notion that we can disemploy certain people so that the white aryan head of household can be supported by the economy and everyone else can just kind of fade away. really sick and strange philosophy and we go on to see how the progressives push for massive social e

it tells the story of emmett till a 14 year old african american boy lynched in 1955. ked the country and became a catalyst for the emerging civil rights movement. the film focuses on tills departure from the midwest to visit his relatives in mississippi, then his disappearance and then the murder trial that ended with the acquittal of two white men. for till's lynching. the film also talks about his mother's decision to have an open casket at his funeral so that the world could see the horrors of racism. black women are so often erased from the screen. we're so often erased from history and the present often erased from stories involving movement building and civil rights. the mill valley film festival was founded in the late 19 seventies. one of its goals is to give women and minorities a larger voice in filmmaking. it allows you to put yourself in somebody else's shoes, and that's what we need more than ever. there was already some buzz that the film till could get some oscar nods once they're announced in january. alright, ali. thank you. time is 6 10. we're going r

and emmett till was a touchstone moment that gets us into the montgomery bus boycott. but if you would have asked me the day before george floyd was murdered, i would have bet my life that mike brown was the moment i couldn't i mean, the ferguson summer seemed like the thing. it seemed like the touchpoint. it seemed like the thing that had changed this country and conversation that changed the country. i don't use that line. but they had had had at least it was imprinted on our memory. and i probably would have argued the trayvon martin was that moment before then. but in between trayvon and and mike brown and george floyd is a whole bunch of stuff that doesn't move the needle. some are more gruesome. walter scott is a more gruesome case. incontrovertible act of malfeasance to me. i mean, the man was shot running away. eric garner. we had video of him being choked out with an illegal chokehold within, within, with something to be clear to the police, don't shoot me. it was against department regulation at the time. it wasn't technically illegal, but against regulation.

talk about this woman, emmett till's mother, who you play in this film. >> mamie till mobley, after sheo was living in chicago with her son. and they had a beautiful life. and this film explores the feelings that she had before sending him to mississippi to be with his family. and what happened after the tragedy into the court trial that therein occurred after the tragic loss of emmett. emmett, it's important to know who she is because she made certain decisions that were critical in understanding what was going on in the southern united states at that time. and it's just -- it's just, you know -- it's about those unsung black women who were a part of the civil rights movement. she was someone who instigated the civil rights movement by the act of showing her son on the cover of "jet" magazine. >> jimmy: right.
