welty's work to william b dilling hamm who also is my mentor and he is at emory. he taught along with partner and other authors in 19th century for 40 years. so in this situation i came to read and understand miss welty's work and i was captivated by it and so i chose to write my phd thesis about her work. she came to university to receive an honorary degree in 1982, there's a lovely photograph in the book of her in her academic robe at emory. i was in the audience and observed her getting the degree. there is a faculty party at watkins home that night and i was invited and faculty members were swirling around miss welty, as you you can imagine many of them were talking to her that i found one minute when no one was speaking with her, i went up to her to say hello. she graciously smiled and invited me to sit beside her on the couch. that is when i met her for the first time, that night i asked her what her favorite southern name was and it took me a while to memorize this but your ego. ruby fisher valentine. and the last name is floyd. miss welty did use part of t

i came back to emory. they checked me over and in the process they did a complete physical examination and an mri showed there was a cancer or growth, a tumor, on my liver. they did a p.e.t. scan, and that lights up a bad place, and it lit up. so they were pretty sure there was a cancer before they operated on august the 3rd and removed it. the tumor was only about 2 1/2 cubic seven at thic centimeters. they did a biopsy and found out it was indeed cancer and it was a melanoma. and they had a very high suspicion then and now that the melanoma started somewhere else on my body and spread to the liver. the doctors told me about 98% of all melanoma is skin cancer, and about 2% of melanomas are internal. so then i came back up here after that and they did a biopsy and found that -- they did an mri and found there were four spots of melanoma on my brain. they are very small spots, about 2 millimeters, if you can envision what a millimeter is. i get my first radiation treatment on my brain this afternoon. >> so
