energy infrastructure. there's clearly more that we need to do. my first question is, how can the committee and congress best help department of energy ensure the reliability of the energy system in light of these ongoing and continuing challenges, if you will? >> yeah, this is such a great question for your role and what is happening inside of the federal government, and what's happening with the private sector as well. so, there's no doubt that the energy sector, like other critical sectors in our society needs to continue to do better to defend itself against cyber threats. we all need to, right? many of you have been saying that for years. as you know, in this country, our energy sector is operated by private, not five hor-profit and state and local entities. there's over 3,000 companies on the electricity side and thousands of others in the oil and natural gas sector. so, to try to protect this really complex environment -- first, you may be aware that inside the federal government, the president issued an executive order. this is just to set the stage for what congress' role might be

you are on the energy and commerce committee, you are on the subcommittees of energy and oversight investigation. how serious was this cyberattack on the colonial pipeline? guest: i think it was enormously seriously. cyber attacks are not new. they have been going on for some time. they are more than just an inconvenience. they can actually endanger people. they can jeopardize people. we have seen that with ransomware attacks in the health care space. it is affecting the entire -- the entire universe of ransomware attacks is not known because some places will simply pay the ransom and be quiet about it and not want to advertise the fact that they were hacked. it can be deleterious to somebody running a business to disclose that. i have argued in the past -- and this goes back several years -- that we ought to make this a no-fault foul and a no-fault situation so our law enforcement agencies can appropriately investigate these things and bring the perpetrators to justice in a very visible and serious way. you can see from the films of the people who have been stuck in those gas lines on the east

so i believe in all of the above energy policy but what we see from committee is we exclude certain types of energy and particular fossil fuels to detriment of people especially low income people to bear cost these higher prices to be able to turn on their right and to be able to drive their cars but i want to just close by saying -- i understand a lot of you representatives from california have had the luxury of being able to vote proxy from out in your home in california -- but you know what, there's a lot of us that believe it is our constitutional duty, in fact, it says in the constitution that we shall be in the united states capitol in order to cast our vote and conduct our work. and it is time for this committee to respect that. it is time for this committee to get us back into session in person. even the judiciary committees i sit in chairman has their in session allow us to take our masks off. this committee is not doing that and it is to the detriment of the work that we were mired to do by the people that we represent. this has been very disappointing the first five months of t

>> absolutely, well, the energy and commerce committee launched an investigation in march. and what we are seeking is comprehensive inquiry to the nih to join the energy and commerce committee to get a complete scientific and independent investigation into the origins of covid-19. that is what we need to appear this is a matter of public health. it is also a matter of bio security. so right now we are tracking two possible scenarios. one is that it originated in a laboratory accident. the other is that it was some kind of natural or agenda that is what we are seeking right now. we need the nih to cooperate with us. there is a lot of circumstantial clues that point to a laboratory accident. so as a part of our investigation, we are pushing more information from nih, the state department, the national laboratory and the department of homeland security and eco-health alliance. eco-health alliance is the entity that received the funding from nih. and we want to know what that was used for. and it was part of eco-health alliance was the one that was involved in funding this bat c
