let me go back to richard engel. it is hard to believe there would be multiple negotiations going on. is it your indication the u.s. is leading these discussions or how is it laying out? >> reporter: i do not believe that the u.s. is leading them. i think it is being led by qatar and now we're seeing more involvement from egypt. qatar has relations with hamas. it has very close relations with the united states. there are u.s. troops based in qatar. hamas also has an office in qatar. so it is well-placed to serve as a mediator here. the u.s. is absolutely involved since there are still americans who are believed to be among the hostages, that america is very closely allied with israel, fully supporting israel's military campaign, but my understanding is that it is not americans who are on the phone directly with hamas, working for these releases, but they are certainly informed. >> and what about these reports that the u.s. has been pressuring or urging or suggesting that israel, you know, slow its roll a little bit o

in other places, the protests are much larger. >> we now have richard engel himself. we showed you that reporting. he is now back in jerusalem where he's reporting for us. richard, what can you tell us from all your reporting from these various places today? >> reporter: there is a lot of anger out there, but there were not millions of people out on the streets. there was -- that protest that i attended in ramallah was quite small, a few thousand people nushlly tried to go. security forces who work for mahmoud abbas prohibited the crowds from approaching the troops, so they were really just a small group, maybe fewer than 100 young people, teenagers who were there. no one was seriously injured. i believe it was actually rubber coated bullets after we found out more from medical officials. so there were demonstrations. the biggest one was the one you were talking about earlier out front of the embassy, but again, not millions of people. that is not to say there isn't outrage, but it does not seem this hospital incident is going to be the one that is going to tip this r
