half of chobani has fallen to isis. >> richard engle filed that dispatch tonight. first american network correspondent to report from chobani where fighting is on going. just incredible reporting and unfortunately, very dangerous to get. richard joins us live which is right near the syrian border in turkey. richard, thank you so much for being here. what's going to happen in chobani, best as you can tell, and why is it strategically so important? important? >> right now,there is something of a standoff in chobani. i would say half of the city, as i mentioned in that report, is held by isis. the other half by the kurdish fighters. and it's very difficult for either side to make advances because this is street-to-street fighting. even though there are some u.s. air strikes, it still takes a lot of skill to -- a lot of bravery, frankly, to advance to leave your sniper nest. they have years of experience, fighting against turks. that is one reason the turkish government don't want them to have weapons. they're very afraid of losing. their biggest fear is probably not b

stephen engle joins us.s out of the the weekend, and just now, services, manufacturing. go for it. theet's start with the ages manufacturing pmi coming in at -- the hsbc manufacturing coming in at 50.4. it was the fifth month in a row of expansion. expansion,ove 50 is but it is barely above. 50.4. it did rise from the previous couple of months. we are seeing weakness in new orders month over month. pmiofficial manufacturing october came in at 50.8. also still expanding, but also the lowest level since may. the official pmi represents sentiment for state-owned enterprises. a smallerurvey is survey. stockpiles, expectations in the official pmi out on saturday, all slowed from september, further signs this economy is not necessarily rebounding, but it is kind of a managed slowdown. the weakness is testing the government's determination perhaps to continue to refrain from broad stimulus, which so far they have. they have resisted to do that even as the economy is headed for the slowest full year of growth since

our china correspondent, stephen engle, joins us from beijing. this puts more pressure on the end of year target. is it going to be a hit or a miss? what are you hearing? >> it doesn't look good for that 7.5% gdp growth target and it doesn't look like authorities are in any hurry to unleash broad stimulus even though they have relaxed the property sector. in agoing to get to that little bit when i talk about services pmi. i want to start with manufacturing first. we are getting a divergent pmi, whichm the hsbc represents the sentiment of private sector manufacturers. hsbc pmi for manufacturing coming in at 50.4, in line with a number that we got a couple weeks ago. it was the fifth month in a row in expansion territory. we also rose from the previous couple of months, readings of 50.2. what we are seeing weakness in is new orders. even though it did slightly pick up in october. the official manufacturing pmi for october came in at 50.8 on saturday. still expanding, yes, but the lowest level since may. output, new orders, stockpile and expectation

we stand here for all the women of the region. >> richard engle joins me from turkey. spent time there and you were with the men and the women. we were stunned boy watching the women taking these roles. what impressions do you have about kobani and what they can achieve there. >> of all of the fighting groups that they had over the last several years, the kurdish fighters were among the most organized and the most secular. they live in something of a progressive idealistic society with no distinction of genders and men and women do the cooking and the work together. women and men are commanders and they don't question each other's authority and they have no formal rank. very different than when we spent time with this group. it was a nationalist group that had a very islamic under tone in many cases. this this case the kurdish fighters were organized and they were principaled and had their issues with isis and issues with turkey. in kobani we found them to be a cohesive group of fighters. >> looking at the other side of the border at the iraqi forces, we heard testimon

richard engle is the first american broadcast network correspondent to go inside and he spent several days embedded with fighters for a rare firsthand view of the battle ground frontlines. richard joins me by phone and he is near the iraq border. tell me what you saw. what you experienced. >> we manage to get into kobani which was not an easy thing. the city is surrounded on almost all sides. about half of kobani is held by isis. the other half are held by the defenders of the city who are mostly kurdish nationalists. they are a secular group of kurds being assisted by the united states. we found a city that is devastated. the downtown area main street, the main bazaar is flattened. the morale among the fighters is high. there a lot of men and women fighting and that is part of the ecos that they have women on the frontlines. most of the frontline positions were held by women. it was a difficult place to operate. there a lot of snipers. they burro holes in the walls so the snipers will move from building to building through the sections of walls. there not a lot ofood and medical care

richard engle made his way into that city. many kurdish fighters, many women only 20 yards from opposing isis fighters. >> this is one of the top field commanders. many of the frontline fighters here are women. they say the fanatics from isis are afraid to be killed by a woman. a dishonor the militants believe could cost them a spot in paradise. she doesn't believe that. they are afraid because of our conviction and our strength, she said. our female comrades are not scared of isis. >> richard engle joins me now from turkey near the border, i believe. is this a turning point? are they gaining ground at least in this symbolically if not strategically important town? >> i don't think we are at a turning point. if the defenders of kobani had a bad week, they could be overrun. what happened here is we got access to the battle and we were able to see it firsthand what is going on in the city. i don't think our access reveals that there is significant change. they control about half the city. isis controls the other half. if they do

. >> richard engle is back in turkey and joins us to tell us about what is happening in kobani. richard, the fighters you spoke to, what are they saying about u.s. assistance? is it making a difference? >> it is making a difference. i think kobani would have been wiped out by isis a couple of weeks ago had not the u.s. helped send more weapons in and send more fighters in. not american troops, but they facilitated the entry of iraqi kurds into kobani and the u.s. as carried out an air drop trying to facilitate through back channels to get supplies into kobani through turkey. without that it is likely that kobani would have fallen. i spoke to the military sources who say that kobani was a few hours away from falling to isis. they were almost out of ammunition and that u.s. military officials were calculating to the hour, calculating the current rate of fire how much longer the people had before they would have been overrun by isis. i think the u.s. role here has prevented a massacre in kobani so far. the city could still be overrun. it is still dependent on a supply of food, medi

i'm richard engle. we've now left chobani and are coming to you from irfa. it's been three months since the u.s. launched a war against isis. as a nation we've. at war in this part of the world for other a decade. and it looks like we could be at war for another ten years, maybe more. tonight, we're going to ask some tough questions about the war against isis. we'll be joined by michael hayden and one of the top commanders during the iraq war. earlier this yore, in an off-the-cuff remark that drew heavy criticism, president obama said he had no strategy yet for taking on isis. then he addressed the nation. >> my fellow americans, tonight i want to speak to you about what the united states will do with our friends and allies to degrade and ultimately destroy the terrorist group known as isil. >> the president promised this war would be different with no american boots on the ground. he said there would be iraqi groups on the ground in iraq and syria boots on the ground in syria. it sounds goods, but where are they? i've been reporting on this region for years

nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engle, joins us. >> reporter: you can see some of the monuments behind me. this is considered an important trip for pope francis, visiting the country with the overwhelmingly large muslim population. on a rare papal visit to turkey, pope francis met with the president and strongly condemned religious extremism and the persecution by isis of christians in iraq. all forms of fundamentalism and terrorism gravely duh mean the dignity of every man and woman, he said, and exploit religion. today pope francis arrived where he visited the building of represents 15 years of power struggles. it was a church for 1,000 years, the spiritual center for an orthodox christian empire. but in 1453, the empire was conquered and sophia was converted into a mosque. today it's a museum, and some turks threatened to protest, but it didn't happen. the pope was given a warm reception, and in the spirit of religious tolerance, pope francis also visited the blue mosque, even praying alongside a muslim cleric, stressing it has been a theater of wars. alex, propose francis is
