cnn projecting that eric adams has been elected new york city mayor. election night headquarters has already gotten this message. there was already a cheer that went up when someone came to the podium saying that eric adams, the brooklyn borough president, former new york police captain, a former senator is going to be the 110th mayor of new york city, only the second black mayor of new york city. the votes are still coming in. a little over 30% of the vote is in, and there's about a 50-point gap between adams. this is what was expected. new york is of course a very democratic city, but adams put together a very interesting coalition working class voters, union voters, voters of color, voters in the outer boroughs, he also ran not just on public safety. this is something he talked about a lot of his campaign. public safety is a prerequisite to prosperity, talking a lot also about that businesses are able to do businesses more easily cutting through the red tape. it seems like he did coming out on top. as i mentioned early on in the campaign, public saf

. >> yeah, and i wanted to ask you about the new mayor of new york city, eric adams.me for the city. employment is high. the city has a long road ahead to recover. from covid, economically and socially. a, how do you see yourself working with him and his office, and more importantly, what does an anti-racist feminist new york city look like? >> i'm looking forward to working with the mayor where we have over 1 million muslims, so the work must continue to repair and heal communities that have been impacted by the xenophobic, islam phobic trump administration. so i look forward to ensuring that we got halal food options and we're working towards food justice in our schools, that our seniors, our south asian and muslim seniors have particular services and programs within senior centers. we got a huge need for senior services. and that we expand on resources for survives of domestic violence. we've seen an uptick since covid impacting muslim survivors, so i'm looking forward to ensuring expand representation for the-muslim community and i know that mayor eric adams will

hey, let's talk about new york city mayor elect eric adams.ersial plain clothed police units which were banned. the former nypd captain dismissed claims from a black activist who said that bringing the units back would lead to, quote, riots and bloodshed. >> it's silly and i think new yorkers should not allow rhetoric like that. the city is not going to be a city of riots. it's not going to be the city of burning. if they want to hurl rhetoric like that, that's silly to new yorkers. the city is ready to move forward. when i ran to become the mayor of the city of new york, i said i was going to reinstitute an anti-gun unit and voters voted on that. i stated what i was going to do. >> you know, rev, obviously people can disagree, but this founder of black lives matter in new york saying that there's going to be bloodshed and violence if eric adams lets this unit come back. obviously not the way to do things and not the way you do things. i always thought that your relationship with new york city commissioners like bill bratton always was great.

i do think eric adams is a unique figure in new york.l known. but i do think he has been pretty unequivocal about there is a bridge too far on language and there is a bridge too far on po policy. he has made no bones about it, he made no bones about it in the primary, and this was in new york city on the democratic side. if you add up the advocate for people who are not pro "defund the police" message, it was still a pretty low turnout. i think this offers a path forward, but i also think you have individual politicians like a chuck schumer who is the majority leader who is worried about his own personal politics. he is going to continue to listen to the people on his left and elevate those voices, and until that changes, i don't know that democrats are clear. >> to that point, he's one person who declared the socialist running for mayor in buffalo. she beat the incumbent in the primary. attracting national attention as a proxy battle between progressives and moderates, walton had called for removing $7.5 million from the police budget.
