eric adkinson is here to show us. >> reporter: you may think that digital odometers like the one in this me they are even easier to roll back than the older ones and it's happening more here in california than any where else. keith lechner thought he found a good deal. he drove from livermore to modesto to buy this 1990 toyota pickup for $2,600. >> it shifted smoothly, it ran great, idled great. >> reporter: he didn't think much of his odometer until his engine blue. >> the first thing that goes through your mind is i'm in the middle of a highway and my car is not rolling. >> reporter: a check of his car report shows that the odometer has been rolled back. his truck was one of 295,000 rolled back vehicles on the road in california last year. the most of any state. the study estimates more than 1 million cars with roll back odometers are in operation nationwide. >> it's really scary how quickly it can be done and how easily it can be done. >> in previous years we would get a few cases trickling in and now seems like the flood gates are open. >> reporter: commander tom wilson with the dmv
